WestRock Reports First Quarter Fiscal 2024 Results

First Quarter Highlights and other notable items:
*Net sales of $4.6 billion; Corrugated Packaging segment sales increased 3.5% compared to the prior year quarter
*Global Paper containerboard shipments increased 21.9% compared to the prior year quarter
*Net loss of $22 million, Adjusted Net Income of $51 million; net loss included $66 million of restructuring and other costs, net
*Loss of $0.09 per diluted share (“EPS”) and earned $0.20 of Adjusted EPS
*Consolidated Adjusted EBITDA of $571 million
*Consumer Packaging Adjusted EBITDA margin increased 60 bps to 15.7%
*Achieved over $200 million in cost savings; expect to significantly exceed previously announced fiscal 2024 target of $300 to $400 million

Sonoco Launches New URB Machine as Part of Project Horizon

Sonoco announced that the new uncoated recycled paperboard (URB) #10 machine is operational as part of its previously announced Project Horizon—the $125 million investment to transform its former corrugated medium machine in Hartsville, S.C to a state-of-the-art URB operation. ePac Flexible Packaging Sets Strategy for Continued Double-Digit Growth

ePac Flexible Packaging, founded in 2016 as the world’s first all-digital flexible packaging company, just turned 8 years old in May of this year. So it’s fair to ask: How is ePac doing with its disruptive business model? From 2016 through 2022 ePac consistently grew 50 -100% per year. In 2023 ePac’s growth slowed, but units produced still increased 30% over 2022 as new customer acquisition remained strong. Today, ePac is an international company with ~$200M in sales. In 2023, and still in 2024, the flexible packaging industry came under significant financial pressure caused by a myriad of factors including inflation, higher interest rates, supply chain issues, emergence from COVID 19, and the availability of capital. The industry, in general, saw top line sales decline and underlying costs increase. ePac responded with a reassessment of its strategy, and took several key steps to mitigate what was/is happening industry-wide.

Amcor announces release of first TCFD report

Amcor released its first Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosure (TCFD) report, which includes the results of Amcor’s climate scenario analysis exercise, along with information about the company’s climate governance structure, risk management approach and performance metrics. As a leader in sustainability, the report marks another milestone for the organization, ensuring continued transparency of its climate-related business risks as well as providing a roadmap on how to best integrate climate risk management opportunities within its operational strategy. Michael Casamento, Chief Financial Officer at Amcor, said, “The report represents the latest example of how Amcor has integrated climate-related considerations into its growth strategy and risk management framework.
