Walmart Showcases Business Strategy Focused on Driving Growth and Shareholder Value

Walmart (NYSE: WMT) is hosting its Investment Community Meeting, where leadership is sharing its focus on driving growth and creating shareholder value. The meeting will highlight Walmart’s people-led, tech-powered omnichannel strategy and why it is uniquely positioned to sustain attractive growth and create shareholder returns.

Best Buy Reports First Quarter Results

Domestic revenue of $9.89 billion decreased 8.7% versus last year primarily driven by a comparable sales decline of 8.5%. Domestic gross profit rate was 21.9% versus 23.3% last year. The lower gross profit rate was primarily due to: (1) lower services margin rates, including pressure associated with the Best Buy Totaltech membership offering; (2) lower product margin rates, including increased promotions; and (3) higher supply chain costs. These pressures were partially offset by higher profit-sharing revenue from the company’s private label and co-branded credit card arrangement. Domestic GAAP SG&A was $1.74 billion, or 17.6% of revenue, versus $1.84 billion, or 16.9% of revenue, last year. International revenue of $753 million decreased 5.4% versus last year. This decrease was primarily driven by the exit of operations in Mexico in FY22 and a comparable sales decline of 1.4% in Canada. International GAAP gross profit rate was 24.3% versus 23.7% last year.

With all major categories posting double-digit gains, unit sales of print book rose 19.5% in the week ended Jan. 30, 2021, over the comparable week in 2020, at outlets that report to NPD BookScan. Unit sales of YA fiction soared by 50.6% over the week ended Feb. 1, 2020, and YA nonfiction sales rose 41.2%. In both cases it was strong across-the-board sales rather than one or two big bestsellers that drove the gains. In YA fiction, We Were Liars by E. Lockhart remained the top title, selling more than 11,000 copies. Brigid Kemmerer’s A Vow So Bold and Deadly was the bestselling new title, selling more than 7,000 copies. YA nonfiction sales were led by Stamped by Jason Reynolds and Ibram X. Kendi, which sold more than 3,400 copies. Juvenile fiction unit sales rose 32.5% and nonfiction increased 24% over a year ago. Alice Schertle’s Little Blue Truck’s Valentine stayed in the fiction top spot, selling just over 25,000 copies.
