Verified Fiber Sourcing: A Key Part of Our Long-Term Sustainability Agenda

Domtar’s sustainability journey begins in the forest, but our work as an industry leader in sustainable forestry continues with our focus on verified fiber sourcing in our sustainability agenda moving toward 2030.

“Our sustainable forestry principles have guided our practices for many years,” says Paige Goff, Domtar’s vice president for sustainability. “We now have advanced technology and other tools to help us be even more effective in applying those principles to our supply chain.”

Building on a long history of responsibility in the forest, Domtar has set two significant goals in the area of verified fiber sourcing:
*We’ll source 100 percent of our fiber from responsibly managed forests.
*We’ll increase our use of recycled fiber and improve the recyclability of our products and packaging.

To achieve the first goal, we’ll support the application of the latest technical and silvicultural research programs, including blockchain networks such as ForesTrust, to provide transparency across the fiber supply chain.

Additionally, we’ll continue to support efforts to increase the availability of certified fiber, with a preference for FSC-certified fiber. We’ll encourage and improve sustainable forest management practices among private landowners through preferential purchasing and helpful collaborations.

We’ll also verify that forests are sustainably managed through third-party certifications or conformance with accepted forest management practices that are science-based and regionally appropriate. And we’ll support programs that promote tree planting and the distribution of seedlings in our communities.

Irving’s Ashland Sawmill Invests in Renewable Energy

This past Spring, our sawmill in Ashland, Maine turned on a turbine that reduces the site's carbon footprint by 1000 tonnes of C02. The turbine is part of a $1.8 million dollar investment in the mill which also included an upgrade to the boilers and an additional control room. This energy efficient project was completed just prior to the COVID-19 outbreak, which all J.D. Irving, Limited Maine operations navigated without any cases of COVID-19 or layoffs. The turbine will allow the site to limit their purchase of electricity, by choosing a greener option. Burning bark, that is already being removed from the logs, creates steam pressure and spins the turbine, creating its own electricity. In addition, there is now sawdust that can be transported to Grand River Pellets (GRP), JDI's pellet plant. The use of site generated mill residues as fuel also reduces landfill disposal and the ash generated from the wood can be used as a soil conditioner on agricultural land. Paper Excellence receives $4.5 million in funding from the Investments in Forest Industry Transformation (IFIT) program

Paper Excellence is pleased to have received $4.5 million from the Investments in Forest Industry Transformation (IFIT) program. This funding will help support an important transformation project taking place at our Catalyst Port Alberni mill. The $4.5 million will be invested at Catalyst Port Alberni to expand the mill’s production capacity for food packaging papers. Traditionally, this mill produced printing and writing grades; however, demand for these products has been in steady decline. Transitioning to food grade papers means meeting growing market demand, providing sustainable alternatives to single-use plastic serving containers, and advancing BC’s circular economy. The new grades will be produced using unique pulping capabilities developed at the Catalyst Port Alberni mill that net a higher yield in fiber use. As a result, the mill will be able to increase the amount of food packaging materials it produces but will use less residual wood fibre to do so.

Neenah Completes Successful Debt Refinancing

Neenah, Inc. announced that the Company has entered into a Term Loan Credit Agreement, providing a Term Loan B Facility of seven years in the amount of $200 million. The Facility is rated BBB-by S&P Global Ratings and Ba3 by Moody's Investors Service. Neenah also announced today that it is calling its outstanding 2021 notes for redemption in full on July 16, 2020. Proceeds under the new Facility will be used to redeem the $175 million of outstanding 5.25% 2021 notes, repay borrowings under the Company’s senior secured revolving credit facility, and for general corporate purposes. The Company also has amended its Global Asset Based Lending Agreement to reduce the revolving credit facility from $225 million to $175 million and make certain other changes related to the refinancing and resizing. The interest rate under the new Facility will be determined based on LIBOR or other published rates, with an expected initial rate of approximately 5.00%. The Term Loan Credit Agreement contains no financial maintenance covenants and includes other customary covenants for agreements of this nature. The Facility may be prepaid with a one percent call premium for the first 12 months, after which it may be prepaid, in whole or in part, without premium or penalty.
