USPS Promotes National Safe Driving Campaign

The Postal Service has one of largest fleets in the world, with more than 246,000 vehicles that drive more than a billion miles every year, delivering mail to more than 169 million delivery points across the nation. Safe driving is a paramount part of our duties as we are Delivering for America.

As part of a safe driving public awareness campaign, the Postal Service is reminding customers of the importance of staying vigilant when maneuvering near postal vehicles.

“Postal Service employees drive our nation’s roads every day, providing a vital service, to deliver America’s mail safely. It is something we strive to do 365 days a year,” said USPS Employee Safety and Health Awareness Manager Leeann Theriault. “We encourage the public to stay alert when around postal vehicles, and together, we can protect our drivers and everyone else on the road. This will reduce risks and ensure that everyone, including our employees, make it home safe.”

So far 2022 has witnessed the launch of 62 titles compared to 81 for the same period of 2021. In the first quarter of 2022 28 titles were launched. In the second quarter the number dropped to 12. The third quarter saw 22 titles introduced.

Keep US Posted — a nonprofit advocacy group of consumers, nonprofits, newspapers, greeting card publishers, magazines, catalogs, and small businesses — warned that postage rate hikes are contributing to the U.S. Postal Service’s mounting losses, after the USPS announced a loss of $6.5 billion for the fiscal year 2023 — the same year it was projected to break even under Postmaster General DeJoy’s Delivering for America plan. During yesterday’s open session, the USPS Board of Governors announced the staggering $6.5 billion loss for the year, driven by mail volume declines of more than 9 percent and an over 2 percent drop in package volumes. The Board of Governors also announced that it anticipates a $6.3 billion loss next year, and noted that the 10-year Delivering for America plan—which depended on package growth that has not materialized — could face changes.

BMI Releases Industry Barometer Survey Results for May

The Book Manufacturers’ Institute (BMI) released the May results for its monthly survey on capacity and lead times for soft cover and hard cover books. As demand has skyrocketed and supply chain woes continue to hamper all segments of manufacturing, BMI put together the survey to get a better idea of what manufacturers were facing and what publishers should expect. May is the third month of the survey. According to responses regarding hard cover books, the average manufacturer was running at 91% of their capacity, up from April’s 85%. The average lead time for completed hard cover books dropped to 91 days, down from 103 in April. For soft cover books, capacity usage went from 94% down to 92% and the average lead time went back to March’s 70 days, based on 15 responses.
