UPM receives an A score for CDP’s Water and Forests Programs

UPM has been positioned on this year’s A List for water and forests by CDP, the non-profit global environmental disclosure platform. CDP’s A List comprises companies from around the world that have been identified as leading in their efforts and actions to combat environmental risk in the past CDP reporting year. Of the companies that submitted information, UPM is one of the only four companies to score an A on both water and forests.

“UPM is committed to the internationally accepted principles of sustainable forest management and to minimise the negative impacts of its operations on water resources,” says Tuomas Niemi, Manager, UPM Environment and Responsibility.

“We aim to maximise our total contribution to society by creating long-term profitable business with responsible practises embedded into our operations and value-chain”, Niemi continues.

CDP publishes A-D scores across climate, water and forests for over 3,000 major corporates, with the leaders celebrated on the A List.

Vallvik Mill granted a new environmental permit

Rottneros' subsidiary Vallviks Bruk AB has on January 12th been granted permission by the Land and Environment Court in Östersund to produce the requested 255,000 tons of sulphate pulp. It is a comprehensive permit under the Swedish Environmental Code, which is associated with a number of conditions, which are broadly in line with the company's previously stated position. "The new permit will ensure that we can continue with our long-term industrial plan, Agenda 500 and increase the capacity of both our mills. The permit also ensures that we can continue to develop the company and our organization," says Per Lundeen, CEO of Rottneros.

Federal government and six key players partner to create a circular economy for plastics

Five leading companies in Canada’s food, beverage and packaging sector are joining forces and created the Circular Plastics Taskforce (Groupe d’action plastiques circulaires, or GAPC) to develop a circular economy for plastics, in partnership with the Canadian Plastics Industry Association (CPIA) and with support from Environment and Climate Change Canada. Éco Entreprises Québec will also support the project as a consultant and financial partner. With the goal of closer alignment between market needs and recycling stakeholders (material recovery facilities (MRF) and packaging companies), Cascades, Danone Canada, Dyne-a-pak, Keurig Dr Pepper Canada, TC Transcontinental, and CPIA have teamed up with Centre de transfert technologique en écologie industrielle (CTTEI) at the Sorel-Tracy CÉGEP and Chamard Stratégies environnementales to identify and recommend solutions for optimizing the handling of plastics throughout the recycling value chain.
