Total U.S. Printing-Writing Paper Shipments Essentially Flat in April 2022

The American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) released its April 2022 Printing-Writing Monthly report. According to the report, total printing-writing paper shipments remained essentially flat (+0.3 percent) in April compared to April 2021.

Total printing-writing paper inventory levels increased one percent when compared to March 2022.

U.S. purchases of uncoated free sheet (UFS) papers in April increased one percent compared to last April while the inventory level increased one percent compared to March 2022. UFS imports increased 12 percent while exports decreased 26 percent in March 2022.

Coated free sheet (CFS) paper shipments increased five percent compared to April 2021 while the inventory level increased two percent compared to March 2022. CFS imports increased 16 percent while exports decreased ten percent in March 2022.

U.S. purchases of coated mechanical (CM) papers in April decreased 21 percent compared to last April while the inventory level increased six percent compared to March 2022. CM imports and exports both decreased compared to March 2021, down 21 percent and nine percent respectively.

Uncoated mechanical (UM) paper shipments increased 15 percent compared to April 2021 while the inventory level increased one percent compared to March 2022. UM imports increased 13 percent while exports remained essentially flat (-0.1 percent) in March 2022.

Holmen is investing SEK 400 million to increase value added and capacity at Iggesund Sawmill

The investment is a further step in Holmen's strategy to grow the wood products business and contribute to the green transition. This will increase the production at Iggesund Sawmill by 20 per cent as well as adding construction timber on top of its joinery products range. "We grow houses. To develop the wood products business is a natural extension of forestry and an important dimension in Holmen’s strategy of owning and adding value to the forest. Following the acquisition of Martinsons and the expansion of Braviken, the investment in Iggesund Sawmill is the next step in strengthening our position in wood products,” says Henrik Sjölund, Holmen’s President and CEO. The investment will enable the sawmill to switch from lower grade joinery spruce to construction timber in both spruce and pine. This will increase the value added and improve the market mix by increasing the share sold to Scandinavian builders’ merchants.

Verso Corporation Announces Board Chairman Succession Plan

Verso Corporation announced that Robert M. Amen, chairman of the company's board of directors, has decided not to stand for reelection at the company's 2018 annual meeting of stockholders and, in connection with his decision, has resigned as chairman of the board effective October 6, 2017. In connection with Amen's resignation as chairman, the Verso board has selected Eugene I. Davis, chair of the Strategic Advisory Committee and chair of the Finance and Planning Committee of the board, and Alan J. Carr, chair of the Compensation Committee of the board, as interim co-chairmen of the board. In a joint statement, Davis and Carr said, "On behalf of the entire board, we want to express our gratitude to Rob for his service to Verso. With grace, wisdom and dedication, Rob led by example as chairman of the board. We are pleased that he intends to remain on the board until the end of his term as a director, and we wish him the best in all of his future endeavors."
