The UK’s New Packaging Tax

The UK is preparing to roll out a new packaging levy under the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) scheme—a move that will shift the financial burden of packaging waste management from taxpayers to the businesses that produce the packaging. With the potential to raise up to £2 billion annually, the policy is designed to encourage companies to adopt more sustainable packaging and improve recycling infrastructure. However, it also raises concerns about increased costs for both businesses and consumers.

One of the most significant effects of the EPR scheme will be on the types of packaging businesses use. Since fees are based on the weight and recyclability of packaging materials, companies will be financially motivated to switch to materials that are easier and cheaper to recycle.

New Assessment of Global Forest Resources: Cause for Optimism

If we are to manage our forests wisely for the benefit of current and future generations, we need to understand the situation of the world’s forests and ongoing trends. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations has gathered data from 234 countries and territories to provide an up-to-date report on about 88% of the world’s forests. The most recent Global Forest Resources Assessment (FRA) showed that from 1990 to 2015, global forested area declined by 129 million hectares (ha) or 0.31% of the world’s forests. Keep in mind, however, that from 1990 to 2015 human populations grew from 5.3 to 7 billion people (a 30% increase) and the demand for food and land increased significantly.
