The future of fashion? Our forests!

Cotton, silk, leather… it is time to move on from these old-fashioned materials, to something better! This evening in Perugia, in the heart of Italy, young designers will be revealing their ideas of our clothing future, and their inspiration? Forests!

Our forests have so much to offer us. Yarns from cypress, beech and eucalyptus trees, not to mention cork, are all softer and more breathable than cotton or silk. Fabrics similar to animal skins can instead come from our hardwoods and conifers.

Forests take to the catwalk
As part of PEFC Italy’s Forests for Fashion project, sponsored by the 2016 PEFC Collaboration Fund, fashion students for the Italian Institute of Design in Perugia have been focusing on bringing the sustainable ethos of PEFC into the fashion world.

Together with their teachers, the students have been creating a collection of clothing and accessories made entirely from wood and wood-based products from PEFC-certified forests.

The culmination of this work is on display tonight at the first ‘3F Fashion for Forest’ fashion show, taking place at 6.30pm in the National Gallery of Umbria in Perugia. We hope to see you there!

From clothing made from beech, eucalyptus and cork oak, to the wooden accessories, all the raw materials are PEFC certified. This ensures that they have come from sustainably managed forests that will be around for generations to come.

Carinata – Seeds of climate positive change

Though no larger than mustard seeds, the fruit of the Brassica carinata plant carries huge promise for carbon-neutral traffic. The “bio” prefix in biofuels might suggest a straightforward option for mitigating climate change. But cultivating plants as feedstock for biofuels is not entirely unproblematic. Not all methods of crop cultivation are sustainable, or climate friendly. And, moreover, if fields are allocated for cultivating biofuel feedstock, will there be enough land left over for farming food crops to feed the ever-growing global population? These are among many complex issues coming under increased scrutiny as the menace of climate change looms larger. Brassica carinata, however, is a plant that seems perfect for the biofuels industry. The grain is unfit for human consumption, yet it contains oil that is highly suitable as raw material for biofuel. As carinata grows in winter outside the normal planting season, it can be sown in the same fields as summer food crops. However, only 30% of land is currently in productive use during winter with winter.

Early Adopters Prove that Sustainable Rubber Certification is Achievable, and Essential

Successful pilot projects to certify rubber producers large and small, and the supply chain companies that process rubber, set a new standard for environmental sustainability in the rubber industry. On 22 September, PEFC will hold a webinar to help other rubber producers follow their lead. Natural rubber represents a USD 300 billion supply chain. Most of this rubber is produced by independent smallholders in Southeast Asia, on the borders of some of the world’s most ecologically important forest areas. Sourcing this rubber sustainably helps protect these forests and is a necessary step towards achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals before 2030. Sustainable forest management and chain of custody certification are relatively new for the rubber industry. But early adopters are already on the move. We have piloted certification for both natural rubber and rubberwood across Southeast Asia. Working with growers of all sizes, we have developed group certification solutions that allow smallholders to band together and prove their sustainable practices. These early adopters demonstrate that certification is entirely achievable. By getting certified, they both open up market access for their rubber, protect adjacent forests and improve their own livelihood.
