Streamlining FSC-certified companies’ EUDR journeys: Critical EU updates

The European Commission announced a proposal for an extra 12 months of phasing-in time of the EUDR. FSC continues to strongly support the creation of deforestation-free markets, in Europe and worldwide, while underlining the continued urgency of swift action to prevent deforestation. FSC remains committed to supporting EUDR implementation and business compliance in the timber and rubber value chains and we encourage companies to continue their preparations. To do so, the following critical updates, clarifications, and resources, recently released by the Commission complements FSC’s mission to streamline the compliance journey.

Guidance document: This long-awaited, non-binding guide complements the EUDR text and will be useful for both operators and Competent Authorities. It features sections for legality, timelines, certification systems, and product scope.

PEFC in Japan: building credibility from the ground up

The need for collaboration and cooperation to expand forest certification in Japan was the resounding conclusion to the SGEC Forest Certification Forum, held last week in Tokyo. “Our bottom up approach to forest certification, which gives national stakeholders control in the development of their own national standards, is the perfect fit for the Japanese context,” said Ben Gunneberg, CEO of PEFC International, during his keynote speech at the forum. Global Forest and Paper Industry Reports on Sustainability Progress

The International Council of Forest and Paper Associations’ (ICFPA) launched its 2017 Sustainability Progress Report. It is the sixth biennial report highlighting ICFPA members’ progress on the sustainability commitments agreed upon in the 2006 CEO Leadership Statement on Sustainability. “We are proud to announce our global industry’s continuous progress, which represents our commitment to social and environmental aspects associated with forest management and the manufacture of forest-based products,” said ICFPA President Jane Molony. “We look forward to continuing to supply the growing global demand for sustainable products, including fuel, fiber and forest products, while moving towards a greener economy.” Click Read More below for additional information.

Certification key to balancing sustainability and costs in global supply chains, says PEFC’s Thorsten Arndt

At the recent United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) event, “Who Pays? For the Implementation of Sustainability-Driven Regulations”, Thorsten Arndt, Head of Advocacy at PEFC International, took the stage to shed light on how smallholders - and the entire supply chain - can navigate the European Union’s new sustainability regulations, particularly the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) and how they can benefit from PEFC certification. Thorsten identified three primary challenges that smallholders face under new regulatory frameworks such as the EUDR: Compliance - Smallholders often struggle to understand exactly what they must do to comply. Cost - Meeting new regulatory requirements can be prohibitively expensive for small producers. Support - Capacity-building is essential, yet fragmented guidance and resources leave many smallholders unsure of how to implement necessary changes.
