Smurfit Kappa’s sustainability achievements recognised with Colombian award

Smurfit Kappa has received the ‘Best Environmental Approach’ award in the Andesco Sustainability Awards in Colombia.

The Andesco Awards, which have been running since 2005, recognise the exemplary achievements of companies in the public utilities and communications sectors.

Smurfit Kappa has a strong track record in sustainability and embeds circularity across all its business operations.

The fibres Smurfit Kappa uses in paper production are from sustainably managed forests. In Colombia, the company has 44,000 hectares of commercial forestry plantations and 22,000 hectares of natural forests that are protected and preserved and FSC® certified.

Last year, Smurfit Kappa recycled a total of 180,000 tonnes of paper and cardboard in Colombia. The Smurfit Kappa Colombia Foundation has also been very active in community development with ongoing investment in education, the environment and other corporate social responsibility initiatives.

Last chance for feedback on ST 1004: certification body requirements for sustainable forest management

The deadline to give your feedback on the second draft of ST 1004, requirements for certification bodies operating sustainable forest management certification, is just a few days away. This is the second public consultation for this vital benchmark standard, with the first consultation concluding earlier this year. The working group developing the document discussed the feedback received during the first consultation and revised the draft standard accordingly. Now we need to hear from you again. Give your comments, feedback, and suggestions, to help us ensure this standard meets your needs and expectations. The deadline for comments is 5 September 2023.

Lecta: efficient, responsible water management as a priority

Water is essential in the pulp and paper industry, which is why at Lecta we prioritize the efficient use of this valuable natural resource. Our mills have a high rate of water recycling, and the amount discharged is almost equal to the intake. Even though our outlet water is within regulated legal limits, we continue to work on improving water quality to reduce our environment footprint even further and constantly monitor waste disposal. In addition, in our mills there are also closed water systems, in which water is reused repeatedly. Lecta is ambitious in continuing to anticipate and carefully manage our water usage and consumption through increasingly efficient processes and water management strategies
