Smurfit Kappa’s sustainability achievements recognised with Colombian award

Smurfit Kappa has received the ‘Best Environmental Approach’ award in the Andesco Sustainability Awards in Colombia.

The Andesco Awards, which have been running since 2005, recognise the exemplary achievements of companies in the public utilities and communications sectors.

Smurfit Kappa has a strong track record in sustainability and embeds circularity across all its business operations.

The fibres Smurfit Kappa uses in paper production are from sustainably managed forests. In Colombia, the company has 44,000 hectares of commercial forestry plantations and 22,000 hectares of natural forests that are protected and preserved and FSC® certified.

Last year, Smurfit Kappa recycled a total of 180,000 tonnes of paper and cardboard in Colombia. The Smurfit Kappa Colombia Foundation has also been very active in community development with ongoing investment in education, the environment and other corporate social responsibility initiatives.

Mondi Launches 2018 Report: Sustainable Packaging & Paper by Design

Mondi Group, a global leader in packaging and paper has today released its 2018 reporting suite Sustainable Packaging and Paper by Design, including its full Sustainable Development report and Integrated report and financial statements. JDI Forester Finds Rare Plant Population in New Brunswick

Forester Grant Steeves of the JDI Sussex Woodlands office has discovered a rare plant population on JDI-managed Crown Land near Havelock, New Brunswick. During his survey walk of a forest block last fall, Steeves noticed a low-ground plant with unique broad white stripes on its leaves. Having had rare plant identification training, Steeves was aware that this could be quite a find. Steeves took a photo of the plant and sent it to JDI Naturalist Kelly Honeyman, who then visited the site to confirm the rarity: a Downy Rattlesnake Plantain - classified as an S-1 plant (with five or less known populations in New Brunswick) - the rarest in the rare plant ranking system.

Canadian forest certification system submitted for endorsement

The Canadian Forest Certification System has been submitted to PEFC for assessment. The public consultation, which is your chance to give your feedback on this revised system, will run from 29 January to 28 March 2024. PEFC Canada revised the country’s national forest certification system to ensure its national forest management standard is up-to-date and continues to meet stakeholder demands and expectations.
