Reducing emissions is an important action for climate – and for circularity

At Stora Enso, we replace non-renewable materials with renewable products for the good of people and the planet. Using all of a tree resource-efficiently, we are experts in creating renewable materials that store carbon, can be recycled, and regenerate as new forest is planted. We accelerate the needed transition to a circular bioeconomy. On Earth Day 2025, themed “Our Power, Our Planet”, we are reminded of the crucial role of cutting our emissions to reinforce the circularity of our products.

To strengthen the renewable nature of our materials, we set our ambition to align with the 1.5-degree scenario of the Paris Agreement in 2021. Our target is to halve the emissions from our direct operations and purchased energy (Scope 1 and 2) by 2030, compared to the 2019 baseline. This target was reached for the first time in 2024, when we achieved a 53% reduction in these emissions. A similar target is set for indirect Scope 3 emissions in the value chain, with the 2024 reduction at 39%.

This milestone reflects our long-term commitment to proactive decarbonisation efforts through numerous smaller actions, such as:
*investing in, and modernising production equipment for resource efficiency
*switching to biofuels in production
*use of renewable energy sources
*powering our transport with biogas, electricity and hydrogen fuels
*developing ways to monitor our performance to maintain and improve our progress

Forest Industry Welcomes Paris Agreement on Climate Change

Nearly 200 countries, including Canada, have agreed to hold the increase in global temperature to 2°C above pre-industrial levels to reduce the risks and impacts of climate change. The agreement calls on countries to reduce emissions from deforestation and forest degradation, while recognizing the role of conservation and the sustainable management of forests. Canada has more than 9% of the world’s forests which absorb tremendous amounts of carbon dioxide to the benefit of our entire planet. Unlike many other forest nations, all harvested trees are regrown largely ensuring the maintenance of our carbon stocks. More to the point, Canada has virtually zero deforestation, just 0.02% per year.

Ninety-six Percent of Americans Have Access to Community Paper Recycling

The American Forest & Paper Association’s (AF&PA) 2014 Community Access Survey shows that overall consumer access to community paper and paperboard recycling in the U.S. reached 96 percent, up from 87 percent in 2010. The survey evaluated 12 separate grades of paper and paperboard, which all showed access increases. Access for 9 of the 12 grades is now at or above 90 percent. The executive summary of the survey is available at: http://paperrecycles.org/sustainability/2014-af-pa-community-access-survey “Access to paper recycling in the U.S. continues to increase – which helps to recover valuable resources, extend the useful life of fiber and make new products,” said AF&PA President and CEO Donna Harman. “In addition, we’re pleased to see significant increases in access to recycling for different paper grades.” The survey results also showed that single-stream recovery has grown in use. Eighty percent of Americans now have access to single-stream collection, a rise from 65 percent in 2010.

Intertape Polymer Group Publishes 2020 Annual Sustainability Report

Intertape Polymer Group Inc. published its 2020 annual sustainability report, titled “Our Circular Economy”. The report provides an overview of the Company’s sustainability progress in 2020 and highlights future opportunities. The report was prepared in accordance with the Global Reporting Initiative (“GRI”): Core option, with details provided in the index section of the report. 2020 Results • Improved worker safety with a 1.9 total case incident rate2 (TCIR) and a 0.6 lost workday case incident rate2 (LWCIR) in 2020 • 21% of total IPG sales were C2C certified by the end of 2020 • 47% of the Company’s packaging products, by sales, were recyclable, reusable or compostable by the end of 2020 • 7.0% reduction in direct energy use in 2020 compared to 2019 • 7.2% reduction in energy intensity in 2020 compared to 2019 • 5.9% reduction in direct CO2 emissions in 2020 compared to 2019 • 2.8% reduction in carbon intensity in 2020 compared to 2019 • 6.4% reduction in water usage in 2020 compared to 2019
