Rayonier Advanced Materials Announces Fourth Quarter And Full Year Results

Fourth Quarter and Full Year 2020 Highlights:
*Fourth quarter and full year income from continuing operations was $9 million, and $0 million, respectively, $66 million and $119 million higher than comparable periods in 2019, respectively
*Fourth quarter Adjusted EBITDA from continuing operations of $53 million was up $44 million from the comparable quarter in 2019 primarily driven by higher lumber and High Purity Cellulose prices
*Full year 2020 Adjusted EBITDA from continuing operations of $153 million improved $78 million from the prior year primarily driven by strong demand for lumber and reduced costs across segments as a result of improved reliability
*Generated $73 million of Free Cash Flow through the year ended December 31, 2020 driven by prudent management of capital expenditures and improved working capital; expect $55 million from cash tax refunds during 2021
*Completed refinancing in December to extend maturities, remove financial maintenance covenants and enhance liquidity

Rayonier Advanced Materials Inc. (NYSE:RYAM) (the “Company”) reported income from continuing operations for the quarter ended December 31, 2020 of $9 million or $0.14 per diluted share, compared to a loss from continuing operations of $57 million or $0.91 per diluted share for the same prior year quarter.

The net income from continuing operations for the twelve months ended December 31, 2020 was $0 million, or $0.00 per diluted common share, compared to a net loss of $119 million, or $2.33 per diluted common share for the prior year ended. The significant improvement in the diluted earnings per share was due to higher prices for lumber and High Purity Cellulose, lower costs driven by improved operational reliability and the conversion of the Company’s preferred stock into approximately 13 million shares of common stock in August of 2019.

Resolute Reports Preliminary Second Quarter 2020 Results

Resolute Forest Products Inc. reported net income for the quarter ended June 30, 2020, of $6 million, or $0.07 per diluted share, compared to net income of $25 million, or $0.27 per diluted share, in the same period in 2019. Sales were $612 million in the quarter, a decrease of $143 million from the year-ago period. Excluding special items, the company reported a net loss of $22 million, or $0.25 per share, compared to net income of $11 million, or $0.12 per diluted share, in the second quarter of 2019. The company reported operating income of $6 million in the second quarter. The $14 million improvement over the previous quarter reflects the favorable impact of the weaker Canadian dollar ($11 million), stronger pulp pricing ($9 million) and higher lumber shipments ($9 million), offset by lower paper and pulp shipments ($18 million) and softer quarter-over-quarter lumber pricing ($5 million), despite a late quarter increase in pricing.

Canadian Forest Industry Welcomes Start of Trade Deal With Europe

Forest Products Association of Canada (FPAC) today expressed its support for the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) between Canada and the European Union for commencing its provisional application. This agreement will immediately result in the elimination of quotas and tariffs of up to 10% on Canadian exports of wood-based panels and other wood products to the European Union. “We welcome the provisional application of the agreement, as a start to freer trade within the area,” CEO of FPAC, Derek Nighbor. “The prosperity of the forest products industry relies on strong exports, which CETA will help support.” Last year the Canadian forest sector exported more than $1 billion of wood, pulp and paper products to the EU member states. This is 3% of total exports of Canadian forest products making Europe the 4th largest international market for the sector.
