Public Consultation of FSC-STD-50-001: Requirements for Use of FSC® Trademarks by Certificate Holders

The Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC) is launching the 2nd public consultation on the revision of FSC-STD-50-001: Requirements for the Use of FSC® Trademarks by Certificate Holders. This document contains requirements for labelling and promotion of FSC-certified products with FSC trademarks, as well as the promotion of an organization’s status as an FSC certificate holder. The consultation will provide an opportunity for interested stakeholders to provide feedback on the draft version of the standard on how to use the FSC trademarks.

The consultation will be open from 7th April 2025 to 6th June 2025, on the FSC Consultation Platform and will be available in English, Spanish, and French.

FSC is revising the trademark standard to: 
*Simplify the rules for using the FSC trademarks, while preserving the integrity and credibility of the FSC certification scheme. 
*Adapt to market dynamics and trends that impact FSC certificate holders. 
*Ensure compliance with new legislative developments in environmental labelling and claims. 
*Align with the updated chain of custody normative requirements. 
*Incorporate improved standard wording and remove ambiguous clauses. 
*Incorporate relevant advice notes and interpretations.

Last year, McDonald's made headlines after it announced that it would be pulling plastic straws from all of its UK locations and replacing them with paper straws. The decision was praised by politicians and environmentalists. Then-environment secretary Michael Gove said it marked a "significant contribution" to helping the environment and that McDonald's was setting "a fine example to other large businesses." But it turns out these straws are not actually so eco-friendly. In fact, unlike their plastic equivalents, they are completely unrecyclable. "While the materials are recyclable, their current thickness makes it difficult for them to be processed by our waste solution providers, who also help us recycle our paper cups," a McDonald's spokesman told the UK's Press Association news agency.

Holmen mills rated world’s most sustainable

EcoVadis is the leading system for evaluating and rating global corporations’ suppliers, and has conducted over 45 000 assessments in 150 countries. Companies using EcoVadis’ services include Coca Cola, Johnson & Johnson, Nestlé, L’Oréal and Heineken. “We’ve been working hard for some time on integrating sustainability issues into all aspects of our business instead of viewing them as separate issues. This is one of many testaments that Holmen and our paperboard mills have a very strong sustainability profile,” said Elin Swedlund, sustainability manager at the Holmen Group. Both Iggesund Mill and its sister facility in Workington were assigned Gold Standard, the highest rating. This means both paperboard mills are among the top one per cent of all companies assessed by EcoVadis, and among the top two per cent of paper industry companies assessed. PEFC Chain of Custody and Trademarks standards – 2013 versions extended to 31 December 2023

Important update for companies still certified against the 2013 version of the PEFC Chain of Custody standard. After 31 December 2023, certificates issued against the 2013 version of PEFC ST 2002 and PEFC ST 2001 will no longer be valid. This is an extension from the previously announced date of 14 November 2023, to enable all certification bodies to complete the issue of 2020 certificates to their certified companies. There will be no further extensions and therefore, from 1 January 2024 any remaining 2013 certificates will automatically lose their validity and will be shown as expired on the PEFC database. To be certified against the 2020 versions of the PEFC Chain of Custody and PEFC Trademarks standards, companies need to adapt their chain of custody management system and procedures to the revised requirements.
