Pregis Achieves Significant Milestones in 2023 Sustainability Report

Pregis®, a leading global manufacturer of protective packaging, mailing and bagging, and flexible packaging solutions, published its 2023 Sustainability Report highlighting its commitment to minimizing environmental impacts. The report details actions and results achieved in 2023, significantly advancing the company’s progress toward its 2K30 objectives. These goals are an extension of the Pregis Purpose to Protect, Preserve and Inspyre, which serve as the cornerstones of the company’s value system.

Here are a few highlights from the 2023 Report:
*Achieved 51% of revenues from products that are paper-based, bio-based, or made from a minimum of 30% recycled content
*Achieved an 86% reduction in operational emissions intensity (scopes 1 and 2), surpassing the 25% reduction goal seven years ahead of schedule
*Diverted 91% of its waste from landfill and incineration
*Saved 748,806 trees from harvest through the Pregis EasyPack® 100% recycled paper portfolio
*Attained International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) PLUS certification for four facilities
*Delivered over 450 hours of sustainability training to employees and 560 hours to customers

Pregis continues to invest in developing innovative products that support a circular economy. The company launched an industry-first 80% post-consumer recycled content (PCR) high-pressure inflatable cushioning product and a first-to-market Polyethylene (PE) Foam solution made with Certified Circular resins.

Metsä Group’s and Valmet’s 3D fibre product demo plant is now operating

The operations at Metsä Group’s and Valmet’s 3D fibre product demo plant in Äänekoski has begun. At the end of 2020, Metsä Group’s innovation company Metsä Spring and Valmet announced they would be investing a total of approximately 20 million euros in the demo plant. The demo plant is part of Metsä Group’s integrated mill site in Äänekoski, and it produces finished 3D fibre packaging products directly from wet pulp without intermediate phases. The moulded fibre-based packaging can replace plastic for example in food packaging. The demo plant currently employs approximately ten people. “Our fibre-based packaging products are a significant new initiative in the global packaging market. The novelty in our products include their layered structure, which, in turn, allows their production in a raw material and energy efficient manner applying a highly automated production process. The layered structure also allows the products to be easily modified for different purposes. The customers’ reception of the new product has been very positive. We know we’re on the right path,” says Metsä Group’s project lead, VP, Jarkko Tuominen.

$99 million Belmark facility to bring over 150 jobs to Allen County

Based in Wisconsin, Belmark is a global industrial leader in packaging and labeling. The new flexible packaging plant in Allen County will mark their second expansion out of their home state and will add over 150 new jobs to the Allen Springs Industrial Park. “This is gonna catch those people that, as I said, are leaving Allen County to go to work in Bowling Green and Franklin and down in Tennessee. This is going to catch some of those people and allow them to stay right here in Allen County and work and provide for their families,” said Allen County judge-executive Dennis Harper. Throughout the ceremony, representatives of Belmark shared their insight into why Allen County was chosen for the expansion. Citing the small town’s charm and potential for economic growth, CEO Karl Schmidt and plant manager Jeff LeCaptain say that Allen County and Scottsville are welcoming community partners for the manufacturing center.
