PPWR: The Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation Explained

To help our customers navigate new rules shaping the future of packaging in the EU, we have outlined the latest information on the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), its importance, objectives, and the differences between existing rules and the key measures proposed.

The PPWR is a proposed piece of legislation revising the current packaging and packaging waste rules applicable in the European Union (EU).

Currently, the main regulatory framework for packaging and its end of life in the European Union is the Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive (PPWD), adopted in the 1990s and revised several times since.

The European Commission proposed to overhaul the PPWD in 2022, after it found that it was not efficiently preventing the growth of packaging waste and the reduction of the environmental impact of packaging. This is why the Commission proposed a Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation with greater ambition than the Directive previously adopted.

Stora Enso expands the De Lier site with a new high-tech factory

Stora Enso opens a new corrugated packaging production factory at De Lier, the Netherlands. The site is part of the recently acquired De Jong Packaging Group, now Business Unit Western Europe in the Packaging Solutions division. The major expansion has been designed with a strong focus on sustainable operations. The expansion adds a new, second factory to the De Lier site and equipping the facility with two new corrugators to augment the existing two. As a result of the expansion, the site is now the largest and most modern corrugated packaging facility in Europe. The De Lier site’s products currently include boxes and trays for fresh produce, horticultural and industrial applications, e-commerce and transport. The newly opened factory at De Lier utilises a variety of sustainable solutions, such as 3.8 MWp of solar panels installed on the roof, which will provide electricity to an equivalent of 1,000 households. The residual heat generated by the corrugators will be used to heat the site’s office buildings, further reducing their carbon footprint.

Mondi supports youth start-up that turns food waste into compostable plastic

Lead2030 was launched by One Young World, the global forum for young leaders, in November 2018 to support youth-led innovation to contribute to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This year’s winning project comes from Genecis Bioindustries, a Canadian-based start-up, which makes compostable plastic from food waste. Genecis has been awarded $50,000 from Mondi as well as 12 months of corporate mentorship focused on business development, marketing/communications support as well as technical mentorship on the potential market applications of PHA polymers in packaging.
