PEFC International Board welcomes two new members

“We are delighted to welcome two new members to the PEFC International Board of Directors, representing the retail sector and labour unions,” said Ben Gunneberg, CEO of PEFC International.

Peter Crook, from Kingfisher PLC, is our new brand owner and retailer representative, and Michael Rose, from the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM), our new labour representative.

Peter and Michael have joined a diverse and vibrant board representing a wide range of interests, including forest owners, indigenous people and traders and buyers.

“With two massive projects underway at PEFC at the moment: the revision of our international standards and the development of our new strategy, it is important that we have a strong board, ready to lead the organization forward,” Ben continued.

“We’re all looking forward to working with Peter and Michael on these and the other challenges that lie ahead.”

Our newly elected Board members
Michael Rose is Chief of Staff for the Woodworkers Department of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM). Mike also currently serves on the Oregon Board of Forestry and the BWI World Board and is a Board member of the Forest Products Industry National Labor Management Committee.

Peter Crook is Timber Strategy Advisor for Kingfisher, Offer and Supply Chain (OSC) and was previously Head of Range for Timber and Internal Building for B&Q, part of Kingfisher PLC.  Peter has been involved in the timber industry since the mid-70s, holding senior commercial roles and has worked closely with sawmills in Scandinavia, the Baltics, Canada and the Far East.

We also said goodbye to Michael Proschek-Hauptmann who recently left the Board. We would like to thank Michael for his contribution and dedication to PEFC, and wish him well for the future.

As EV Sales Slow, Focus Shifts for Some to Heavy Duty Vehicles

Low gasoline prices and continuing performance issues have slowed the growth of electric car sales. But that has not stymied progress in electrifying larger vehicles, including garbage trucks, city buses, and medium-sized trucks used by freight giants like FedEx. The clang of garbage cans will still probably wake people way too early in the morning. But in Santa Rosa, California, at least, the roaring diesel engine will be quiet, replaced by a silent, electric motor.

On greenwashing and responsible dialogue (UPM Blog)

In terms of sustainability, UPM has ranked as or among the best performers in its industry for many years based on the actions we take and the progress we make. Our most recent recognition is Triple A List status in CDP for our actions to mitigate climate risk, prevent deforestation and enhance water stewardship. A remarkable achievement given that only six Triple A List companies in the entire world have earned this status! The Finnish Friends of the Earth declared this CDP status, and UPM's public commitment to the UN Global Compact’s business ambition to limit global warning to 1.5C, as a “UPM greenwashing campaign”. This is a stunning claim that undermines not only the work done by our employees but also the highly respected non-profit organizations that are well known for their high integrity. Like many companies UPM is often asked to respond to different ratings and rankings because of the increasing interests and demands from customers, investors, rating agencies and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) towards our environmental, social and governance performance.
