PEFC announces departure of CEO

We begin 2022 with the announcement that Ben Gunneberg is departing PEFC after a long and distinguished career as Secretary General/CEO.

“The PEFC global alliance is grateful for Mr Gunneberg’s outstanding service and commitment to PEFC, as well as his significant accomplishments over his distinguished tenure,” said Eduardo Rojas Briales, Chair of PEFC International.

“Under his leadership, PEFC has made a real and measurable difference in forests around the world and in the lives of people who depend on these forests.”

Mr Gunneberg has been the leading advocate for PEFC and for our common objective of promoting sustainable forest management during his 22 years of service. We are deeply grateful for his unwavering dedication, loyalty, and outstanding service.

The entire PEFC alliance thanks him for his exemplary enthusiasm, commitment, and persistence in taking the vision of the PEFC founders, and creating, building, and shaping PEFC into an international organization that enjoys respect globally.

PEFC wishes Mr Gunneberg the best in his future endeavours, which we are sure he’ll undertake with the same dedication and passion he gave to PEFC.

PEFC is now in the process of recruiting a successor. A vacancy announcement will soon be published, and the Board looks forward to finding the best candidate for PEFC. For the transition period, Michael Berger, PEFC’s Deputy Secretary General and Head of Technical Unit, has taken over the role of acting Secretary General from beginning of January.

Evolution of the SFI Standards: SFI Launches Standard Revision

The Sustainable Forestry Initiative Inc. (SFI) launched the process to revise and update the SFI standard requirements at the SFI Annual Conference today. A conference workshop marked the official start of the revision process with over 200 members of the SFI community taking part. “The SFI Standards are developed through an open and inclusive process involving the many different people and groups who know and care about our forests including forest sector representatives, conservation groups, academics, researchers, brand owners, resource professionals, landowners, educators, local communities, Indigenous Peoples, and governments,” said Kathy Abusow, President and CEO of SFI Inc. The process includes 10 public standards development workshops across the U.S. and Canada including a dedicated workshop for Indigenous Peoples and a facilitated webinar workshop to accommodate those stakeholders that cannot make any of the regional workshops.

Aptar Releases 2019 Corporate Sustainability Report

AptarGroup, Inc. released its 2019 Corporate Sustainability Report. The 2019 Sustainability Report highlights Aptar’s extensive sustainability initiatives that have been implemented across its global operations. As in previous reports, Aptar summarizes several milestones measured and achieved in three key areas of people, planet and product. In 2019, Aptar signed the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s New Plastics Economy Global Commitment, joining forces with other businesses and governments committed to changing how plastic is produced, used and reused. Since the last report, Aptar also formalized its Science Based Targets, pledged its support to the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) and joined the United Nations Global Compact initiative. Aptar is committed to increasing the usage of post-consumer recycled resin (PCR) and researching additional opportunities for more sustainable resins and the recyclability of its products. Aptar’s aspirations, safety programs, societal impact of products and community outreach initiatives are also featured in the report.

Forest certification systems are essential to enable sustainable timber traceability

"What I'm most looking forward to at the PEFC Stakeholder Dialogue are practical and informed discussions on the crucial role of forests and certification to support net zero emissions by 2050," says Dr Dorothy Maxwell, Sustainability Director at Davy Horizons and a moderator of tomorrow's Stakeholder Dialogue. In our interview, she gave us an insight into her job as Sustainability Director, the role of forests for tackling climate change, and what difference certification makes for businesses. Can you briefly introduce yourself? Hello – I'm Dr Dorothy Maxwell. I'm a sustainability professional with over 20 years international experience working with business and government on sustainability. My training is a MSc and PhD in Environmental Science from Imperial College London. I’m a Fellow and, board member of the Institute of Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability.
