SCA’s seedling operation has now delivered 100,000 spruce seedlings for planting on SCA land in Latvia. The seedlings are frozen and delivered packaged in corrugated board boxes. “This is the first year that we have delivered boxed frozen seedlings,” says Peter Engblom of NorrPlant. SCA owns approximately 20,000 hectares of land in Latvia and there are plenty of available sites where SCA plans to plant new forest. “We have delivered 100,000 spruce seedlings of our SuperPot seedling type, which is a two-year-old seedling and therefore somewhat larger than other seedlings,” says Peter Engblom, Business Developer at NorrPlant, and continues: "SuperPot is perfect for the fertile lands in Latvia because the plant type suits land subject to significant vegetation stress.

Graphic Packaging International (“Graphic Packaging” or the “Company”), a global leader in sustainable consumer packaging, today announced it has entered into a virtual Power Purchase Agreement (“vPPA”) in Europe with Zelestra, a client-focused, multi-technology, global renewable energy company.The vPPA supports Zelestra in adding renewable electricity to the European power grid and advances Graphic Packaging’s commitment to reduce its greenhouse gas (“GHG”) emissions by receiving renewable energy attribute certificates[1] generated by the project. The renewable electricity generated by two of Zelestra’s solar projects to be built in Spain – José Cabrera and Socovos II – will have a combined total capacity of 83 megawatts (MWdc). Graphic Packaging expects to receive renewable energy attribute certificates1 corresponding to approximately 86 percent of the solar projects’ output. The agreement is a strategic component in achieving Graphic Packaging’s science-based target to reduce Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 50.4 percent by 20322. It will increase the Company’s purchased renewable electricity in Europe to approximately 70 percent.

The nation’s largest supermarket chain is ditching plastic bags across all its banners — but not all at once. The Kroger Co. on Wednesday announced it is phasing out single-use plastic bags and moving to reusable bags chainwide, with the transition expected to be completed by 2025. Kroger is undertaking the initiative in phases, and its Seattle-based QFC chain will be the company’s first retail division to phase out single-use plastic bags. The company expects QFC’s transition to be completed in 2019. The company noted that some estimates suggest that 100 billion single-use plastic bags are thrown away in the U.S. every year.
