Mondi: Trading update Q3 2023

Mondi plc, a global leader in the production of sustainable packaging and paper, today provides an update on trading for the three months to 30 September 2023 (“third quarter” or “Q3 2023”).

In the third quarter of 2023 the challenging market conditions continued as expected in light of the ongoing weak macro-economic environment. Market demand has remained soft with lower average selling prices largely mitigated by lower input costs and tight fixed cost control. A much-reduced forestry fair value gain resulted in a lower underlying EBITDA of €261 million when compared to Q2 2023.

In Corrugated Packaging, containerboard prices were stable with our order books improving. Flexible Packaging saw further price and volume declines in kraft paper, which is traditionally later cycle. Our converting network delivered a resilient performance. Uncoated Fine Paper pricing continued to decline in Europe on ongoing weakness in demand. Southern Africa markets remain stable. The forestry fair value gain, accounted for within uncoated fine paper, was €14 million in Q3 2023, significantly lower than Q2 2023 of €72 million.

Georgia-Pacific Manufactures EarthKraft™ Mailers with Sustainability In Mind

The growing customer and consumer demand for sustainable and efficient packaging drove our innovation efforts for producing packaging that could be recycled. Our EarthKraft™ mailers are made from 100% legally and responsibly sourced wood and are a paper-based alternative to plastic poly and bubble-padded mailers. As of 2022, over half a billion mailers have successfully been shipped and are on track to reach over one billion in 2023. EarthKraft™ mailers are SFI ® Certified which means we follow forestry best management practices to protect the land, habitat, and drinking water. Not only do our mailers create less waste, they also have a 96% re-pulpability rate which means they can be turned into more mailers (or even boxes).

Stora Enso plans a programme to improve long-term profitability and competitiveness

Due to the continued weak and uncertain market environment, Stora Enso plans to initiate a new profit improvement programme targeting annualised EUR 80 million improvement of the operational EBIT. This could lead to a potential reduction of approximately 1,000 employees. Local change negotiations in line with the local legislations will start as soon as country specific plans are further detailed. The profit improvement programme is designed to improve Stora Enso’s long-term competitiveness by focusing on core business activities that can drive the Group’s strategy supported by a decentralised operating model. The profit improvement programme would be implemented without any new production site closures.
