Mondi supports youth start-up that turns food waste into compostable plastic

Mondi, a leading global packaging and paper manufacturer, is partnering with One Young World for a second consecutive year as a sponsor of Lead2030.

Lead2030 was launched by One Young World, the global forum for young leaders, in November 2018 to support youth-led innovation to contribute to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Lead2030 aims to find, fund and accelerate solutions proposed by young innovators for each of the global goals and enable them to scale and accelerate their impact.

As a challenge partner for Lead2030, Mondi is supporting the achievement of the SDG12 (responsible production and consumption), with the ultimate aim to turn packaging waste into raw materials of inherent value.

This year’s winning project comes from Genecis Bioindustries, a Canadian-based start-up, which makes compostable plastic from food waste. Genecis has been awarded $50,000 from Mondi as well as 12 months of corporate mentorship focused on business development, marketing/communications support as well as technical mentorship on the potential market applications of PHA polymers in packaging.

NORPAC Announces Arrival of New Recycling Equipment for Packaging Papers

North Pacific Paper Company (NORPAC) is excited to announce the arrival of a new state-of-the-art drum pulper that will help the company expand its production of lightweight recycled packaging papers and safeguard more than 400 mill jobs and support other indirect jobs in Cowlitz County. The new pulper just arrived at the Port of Longview and will be moved this week to the NORPAC mill. The pulper and other mill infrastructure upgrades represent more than a $50 million capital investment that will expand Longview mill operations to transform wastepaper into lightweight recycled papers for corrugated boxes, displays, bags and various other packaging products.

AF&PA Releases August 2024 Packaging Papers Monthly Report

Total packaging papers & specialty packaging shipments in August increased 12% compared to August 2023. They were up 12% when compared to the same 8 months of 2023. The operating rate for unbleached packaging papers was 90.7%, up 10.2 points from August 2023 and up 6.3 points year-to-date. Shipments of the biggest subgrade in bleached packaging papers - food wrapping - were 25,300 short tons for the month of August, down 0.5% from the same month last year and essentially flat year-to-date.
