“In 2024 Mondi successfully started up five major capacity expansion projects on time and within budget building a strong platform for growth. The largest of these, the new paper machine at Štětí (Czech Republic), commenced operations ahead of schedule in December. We are very appreciative of the commitment of our colleagues who have worked tirelessly over the last few years to deliver these projects. Our focus now turns to executing our operational and commercial strategy and leveraging our expanded product offering.

UPM and Dongsung Chemical announce a development partnership that will accelerate the introduction of renewable, sustainable forest-sourced materials into the Asian market and reduce fossil resource consumption. Dongsung Chemical, headquartered in South Korea and UPM Biochemicals, headquartered in Germany have agreed to form a strategic partnership to develop renewable products using bio-based raw materials, initially for footwear materials. Dongsung Chemical has signed a Letter of Intent for this strategic partnership to develop a renewable polyurethane product based on UPM Biochemicals’ biobased mono-ethylene glycols (MEG), UPM BioPura™. UPM is investing 750 million Euros to build the world’s first industry scale biorefinery at Leuna in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, to convert sustainably sourced, certified woody biomass into next generation biochemicals. The facility aims to produce 220,000 tonnes annually in total. Bio-MEG is one of the outputs. UPM targets the start-up for end 2023.

Billerud introduces new regional organization for Europe and appoints acting CFO

Billerud is introducing a new organization whereby the company harmonizes and operates its business in two distinct geographical regions - Europe and North America. Billerud further appoints Andrei Krés as acting CFO, effective immediately. Matthew Hirst, previously EVP Commercial, has been appointed President of Billerud Europe and will lead the new European organization consisting of Commercial, Operations and Procurement & Wood Supply functions. Kevin Kuznicki remains President of the North American organization. "I’m pleased that Matthew has taken the position of leading the Europe region, and I’m convinced he will take the region forward on the journey to challenge conventional packaging solutions and create the packaging of tomorrow”, says Ivar Vatne, acting CEO and President of Billerud.

Canfor Extending Temporary Curtailments in B.C.

Canfor Corporation is announcing an extension of sawmill curtailments in British Columbia (B.C.) due to ongoing weak market conditions and the lack of available economic fibre. The production capacity will be reduced through two-week curtailment extensions in January at select solid wood facilities in B.C. This will remove approximately 21 million board feet in addition to the 150 million board feet previously announced on December 5, 2022. The Company will continue to adjust operating rates to align with market conditions and the available supply of economically viable timber.
