The Sustainable Green Printing Partnership (SGP), the leading authority in sustainable printing certifications, announced today the release of version 4.0 revised criteria of its sustainability certification which was first established in 2008. The new criteria which will be effective Jan. 1, 2022, maintain a focus on the three pillars – societal, economic, and environmental – through the development, implementation and documentation of a robust sustainability management system (SMS) and series of best practices. Revised every five years, SGP’s certification criteria establishes certified facilities as leaders in the sustainable supply chain for print and related supplies. The SGP Board of Directors approved version 4.0 which further streamlines the criteria, as well as includes provisions pushing the circular economy model. With a circular approach, the certification makes SGP facilities one of the strongest parts of a sustainable supply chain. Criteria focus on validation and documentation of operational metrics help facilities contribute to their customers’ sustainability goals.

High-graphic, efficient digital inkjet corrugated printing on EFI™ Nozomi C18000 ultra-high-speed single-pass inkjet printers continues to reach new benchmarks for packaging providers, including the achievement of another important certification addressing key recyclability needs. Electronics For Imaging, Inc. has received an additional validation from the Western Michigan University (WMU) Recycling, Paper and Coating Pilot Plant – a leading certification organization for corrugated recycling – that further verifies the recycling and repulpability of boards printed with white EFI Nozomi UV LED inks. The WMU Pilot Plant provided an OCC (old corrugated containers) certification to EFI Nozomi white inks, extending the solid, research-driven evidence that Nozomi inkjet-printed corrugated boards can safely, efficiently and effectively enter recycling streams. This new certification follows the WMU Pilot Plant’s initial OCC certification provided for the EFI Nozomi C18000 printer’s CMYK four-color process ink set.

Lane Press announced that it has installed a second new Osako saddle stitch binding system within three months. This completes the company’s upgrade to its saddle stitch capabilities. Installation of this Osako Tener Alpha Saddle Stitcher has been completed, and the unit is fully operational. Like the first Osako Tener Alpha, this state-of-the-art binder is rated to produce 12,500 books per hour and includes automation capabilities that reduce setup and make-ready times. This Osako will replace an existing saddle stitcher, such that Lane’s bindery will boast four high-speed saddle stitch binders and two perfect binding lines. Lane’s configuration of this binder will include one cover feeder, six pocket feeders, 4th & 5th knife trimmers, high-speed addressing, and full automation feeding capabilities. The stitcher is capable of handling a wide range of piece sizes and thicknesses, including tabloid and digest format, oversized blow-ins, envelopes, cards, and light basis weight stocks.
