Hearst Magazines today announced that Jon Gluck, formerly managing editor of Vogue, has been named executive director, editorial talent, development and special projects, a new role responsible for senior-level editorial recruiting and magazine development. The announcement was made by Hearst Magazines President David Carey and Chief Content Officer Joanna Coles. Gluck assumes his new position on September 5, reporting to Coles and Scherri Roberts, senior vice president, Human Resources.
Gluck will be responsible for senior-level editorial recruitment for Hearst Magazines’ new launches and 20 brands in print, and will work closely with existing editors on magazine development. In addition, he will conceptualize new magazines and special projects, such as live events.
“To say that the industry is going through an exciting period of change is an understatement,” Carey said. “Jon will play a central role in the transformation of our U.S. media business, both as we evolve our existing businesses, and acquire and start new ones.”
“This is a new, multi-dimensional role,” Coles said. “In addition to identifying and fostering talent, Jon will help create new brands and partnerships and strengthen existing ones as we double-down on development. Following on the success of our premiere issues of The Pioneer Woman and Airbnbmag, we’re more focused than ever on accelerating the process from idea to introduction.”
Gluck was managing editor of Vogue since 2013. During his tenure, he helped shape the brand’s strategic direction on all platforms, top-editing print copy, overseeing budgets and contracts, liaising with branded content creators, and managing the editorial and design teams.
Gluck succeeds Eliot Kaplan, vice president, talent acquisition, who announced his retirement earlier this year after 18 years at Hearst Magazines. A key advisor to senior management, Kaplan identified top talent for new launches, including O, The Oprah Magazine, Food Network Magazine and HGTV Magazine, as well as Hearst’s existing portfolio of fashion, luxury, lifestyle and men’s brands. Prior to joining Hearst, Kaplan was the award-winning editor-in-chief of Philadelphia Magazine and managing editor of GQ. He will remain in his role through the end of the year.
“Eliot’s contributions to Hearst are immeasurable,” Coles said. “He is a trusted ally with an uncanny knack for connecting talent with brands to drive success, both editorially and commercially. He has been an important part of my career and those of so many of my colleagues, and we all wish him the very best.”
“My focus and my passion has always been to make great magazines, find and nurture talent, and develop brands and experiences that resonate,” Gluck said. “Hearst is experimental, bold and innovative, and I’m excited to work with all of the editors to build their initiatives, capabilities and teams.”
