Forest sector and DUC renew wetlands partnerhip

In conjunction with the start of National Forest Week, Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) announced that the Forest Management Wetland Stewardship Initiative (FMWSI) would be renewed for a second three-year term. FMWSI is a unique partnership between DUC and Alberta-Pacific Forest Industries Inc., Canfor, the Forest Products Association of Canada (FPAC), Millar Western Forest Products Ltd., Tolko Industries Ltd., West Fraser, and Weyerhaeuser Company. The initiative grew out of a shared desire among partners to pool resources and tools, to advance wetland stewardship in the working forests of Canada’s boreal region.

In its first term, FMWSI focused on addressing knowledge gaps in the industry by developing guiding principles and best management practices for forest practitioners operating in or near wetlands. Now complete, these resources are available for free download or purchase from the DUC website. The second term will build on the accomplishments of the first, with a greater emphasis on knowledge transfer.

Millar Western’s Chief Forester Bob Mason joined other FMWSI partners to celebrate the accomplishments of the first term and develop a work plan for the second. Said Bob, “We are working with DUC to review operational procedures to ensure consistency with wetlands best practices and to provide wetlands training to our Woodlands team. There is no doubt that FMWSI is making a positive difference in our understanding of how we can better operate in and around wetlands.”

PEFC response to Greenpeace report “Destruction: Certified”

PEFC notes the concerns voiced by Greenpeace in a recent report, namely that ‘[c]ertification on its own has not helped companies meet their 2020 commitments to exclude deforestation from their supply chains’ and cautions that certification was never designed – and never claimed – to do so on its own. “Forest certification is an important part of the toolbox needed to stop deforestation, protect biodiversity, safeguard livelihoods, and provide society with wood as a sustainable, renewable raw material,” said Ben Gunneberg, CEO of PEFC International. “Forest certification is not designed to solve issues like deforestation by itself. This is because many of the factors causing deforestation are outside forestry, such as the demand for land for agricultural production. We need to employ multiple tools, ensure the support of all stakeholders, and work collaboratively to achieve our common objective: safeguarding our forests,” added Mr Gunneberg.

AF&PA Urges Chinese Authorities to Keep an Open Market for Recovered Paper Imports

Advocating for free and fair recovered fiber trade policies with China, American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) President and CEO Donna Harman announced the association’s filing of formal comments with the World Trade Organization (WTO) and Chinese authorities: “We believe China has violated their obligations under the WTO and will disrupt international trade and the global market for recovered fiber by their import limiting actions. Specifically, China has mischaracterized certain valuable raw material as ‘solid wastes,’ has taken action not proportional to its own regulation, is favoring its domestic industry over imports and has not provided enough time for U.S. operators to respond. We urge Chinese authorities to immediately engage with the U.S., other WTO member states and appropriate recovered fiber operators and address a number of concerns in order to ensure a free and fair global recycling system.”
