End of lockout at Alma Resolute Forest Products plant

The approximately 240 workers of the factory accepted on Friday afternoon by 81.3% the solution hypothesis presented to both parties by the conciliator of the case in the general assembly. The company also accepted this proposal.

The workers are happy with the result of today’s (Friday) meeting. Obviously, no one wanted to continue on the picket line, at least until winter. Daniel Bilodeau reacted on the line.

The return to work will be gradual, starting September 18. Workers have been on strike since July 4. The company imposed this measure after a third production stoppage by employees.

Sappi announces the closure of Paper Machine 2 at its Stockstadt Mill in Germany as well as Paper Machine 9 and the energy complex at its Westbrook Mill in the USA. Following an exhaustive consultation process an agreement was reached with mill employee representatives to permanently close PM2, which has a Coated Woodfree paper production capacity of 240 000 tons per annum. Stockstadt will now focus on its strong and growing uncoated woodfree offering. Approximately 170 employees will leave the company with production expected to cease on 30 September 2020. After a period of review, Sappi North America has decided to permanently shut PM9 and the majority of the energy complex at its Westbrook Mill in the State of Maine. Approximately 75 employees will be impacted. The impacted assets are expected to close by end of calendar year 2020.

Mondi Trading Update Q3 2024

Mondi provides an update on trading for the three months to 30 September 2024 (“Q3 2024”). Underlying EBITDA for the quarter was, as expected, lower than the previous quarter, at €223 million (Q2 2024: €351 million). This was primarily due to more planned maintenance shuts and a forestry fair value loss, which together resulted in a difference between the third quarter and second quarter of approximately €90 million. This was in addition to softer seasonal demand and higher input costs. Selling prices in Corrugated Packaging and Flexible Packaging were higher when compared to the previous quarter due to the implementation of paper price increases earlier in the year. After a recovery in pricing at the start of the year, pulp and paper selling prices in Uncoated Fine Paper declined in the quarter. Andrew King, Chief Executive Officer, said: “While we are seeing the benefits from the increase in prices earlier this year across our key paper grades, trading conditions remain muted against the backdrop of an uncertain macroeconomic environment. In the fourth quarter there will be fewer planned maintenance shuts, and we expect the normal seasonal pick-up in demand.
