Earth Day 2019: HP Is Reinventing ‘Reuse’ and Creating Environmental, Social Impact

In celebration of Earth Day 2019, HP is announcing major milestones:

Sustainability is the new workplace standard: A global, 20,000-participant survey released by HP found that 61 percent of workers believe sustainability is mandatory for businesses. It also found that employees are more productive, motivated and engaged when working for an employer who is leading the charge in social responsibility.

$2 million investment to expand HP’s ocean-bound plastic supply chain. The company will build a new PET and HDPE bottle washing line in Haiti that will allow it to produce cleaner, higher quality recycled plastic locally for use in HP products.

HP partners with NGO Work to build two new learning centers, equipped with HP laptops and printers that use cartridges made from locally collected plastics, enabling children to receive a quality education at the collection sites while their parents work nearby.

Amazon Continues Renewable Energy Investments with Wind and Solar Projects in Australia, Europe, and the US

Amazon is investing globally to enable new renewable energy projects as the company works towards net zero carbon by 2040. Amazon’s first renewable energy project in Australia is a 60 megawatt (MW) solar project anticipated to come online in 2021 in northern New South Wales. Once complete, the project is expected to generate 142,000 megawatt hours (MWh) of clean energy annually, which is equivalent to the annual electricity of almost 23,000 average Australian households. Amazon’s newest renewable energy projects in Europe include 122 MW from an onshore wind project in Västernorrland, Sweden, expected to come online 2022, and a new 50 MW solar farm in Zaragoza, Spain, expected to begin operations in 2021. Once enabled, these projects have the capacity to power the equivalent of 158,000 average European homes each year.

For the fourth edition of PEFC Wood Works, PEFC Finland teamed up with architect and environmental artist Marco Casagrande to showcase the future of living to the people of Helsinki. As cities become more densely populated, we must find more agile ways to build, and live in, new housing solutions. In the center of Helsinki, PEFC Wood Works x Tikku constructed a micro-size apartment house on just one parking slot in just one night. Tikku (‘stick’) is a demonstration of dense urban housing and Finnish wooden construction. Even better, all the wood used in the installation comes from sustainably managed, PEFC-certified, forests.
