Canada’s Forest Products Industry Applauds “Toronto Tomorrow”

Sidewalk Labs released its Master Innovation and Development Plan (MIDP) for Toronto’s eastern waterfront yesterday. Entitled “Toronto Tomorrow”, the plan is expected to create significant Canadian jobs, tax revenues and GDP contributions. Derek Nighbor, President and CEO of Forest Products Association of Canada (FPAC) issued the following statement today in response to the MIDP:

“The Toronto Tomorrow proposal prominently features the use of wood from Canada’s sustainably managed forests as a cornerstone of its project – including a plan to build with mass timber, to use wood to build affordable and below market housing for Torontonians, and to invest $80 million in mass timber manufacturing.

In Canada and around the world, wood is experiencing a resurgence as a building material of choice because it is environmentally friendly as well as beautiful, durable, and high performing. This project is a great way to address a number of community needs in Toronto, while providing a boost to our rural and northern forestry communities. We could not be more excited to see this visionary project taking root in Toronto for millions to see and experience.”

Head Above Water: PEFC-certified timber helps to challenge mental health stigma

Visitors to London’s South Bank last month saw a dramatic change to the city’s skyline, all in support of the UK mental health and the anti-stigma campaign, Time to Change. As part of the annual London Design Festival, and designjunction, Head Above Water was a breath-taking, 9 metre high sculpture by British designer, Steuart Padwick. This piece of public art sought to stimulate the discussion to eradicate mental health-related stigma and discrimination. The project used precision engineered, renewable and sustainable PEFC-certified cross-laminated timber (CLT) panels supplied by StoraEnso. International Paper Wins 2017 AF&PA Sustainability Award for Sustainable Forest Management

“International Paper took the initiative to increase and expand its certified fiber supply by supporting small private landowners – benefitting its customers, its suppliers and its businesses,” said AF&PA President and CEO Donna Harman. International Paper created a cost-effective means for small private landowners to become Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified following customer demand for certified products. Through Certified Forest Management LLC, its own FSC forest management group, International Paper has directly enrolled and actively maintained FSC forest management certification for 210 private landowners in ten states since 2012, significantly increasing certified forestlands and their certified fiber supply in the process. Metsä Group is looking into the construction of a carbon capture facility

Metsä Group is exploring possibilities to construct a carbon capture facility at one of its pulp or bioproduct mills. The investigation is a continuation of the work initiated in the spring, in which Metsä Group and Fortum jointly studied the capture of wood-based carbon dioxide and its use in the chemical industry and hydrogen economy, for example. According to Pirita Mikkanen, Metsä Group’s VP, Energy, wood-based carbon dioxide is a major production side stream in the forest industry, and it could be used more efficiently. “Our cooperation with Fortum has given us good experiences of and greater insight into carbon capture. I believe we can use wood-based carbon dioxide emissions much more than we currently do. We see new cooperation opportunities with the chemical industry, among others.”
