An innovative cartonboard solution promotes the circular future of perfume packaging

Smurfit Kappa has demonstrated its commitment to delivering on its sustainability goals through the recent inauguration of two state-of-the-art investments in Spain. Over 12,000 solar panels were unveiled at the packaging leader’s Sangüesa paper mill which will work alongside its biomass and recovery boilers to generate more than 50% of its annual energy requirements, the equivalent to powering 3,600 homes. The photovoltaic system, which is the largest of its kind in the Navarra region, is set to reduce the mill’s annual CO2 emissions by over 3,000 tonnes and represents an investment of €6 million. Since 2005, the Sangüesa paper mill has reduced its CO2 emissions by more than 51%.

Work has begun on Saica Group’s new corrugated board factory in Barcelona, which will start operating in the spring of 2025. Located in the municipality of Sant Esteve Sesrovires, the plant will combine the operations currently carried out at Saica Pack El Prat and Saica Pack Barcelona. The new project involves an investment of more than Euro 100 million and aims to increase the current joint production of the two factories by up to 45%. The new factory will be equipped with the latest technology, seamlessly combining flexography and offset processes. It will offer significant advances through the digitalisation of customer services, enabling Saica to deliver the high-quality standards and service that set them apart from the market.
