Ahlstrom achieves recyclability certification for a wide range of food packaging papers

Continuing a rapid development journey of sustainable and fiber-based packaging innovations, Ahlstrom passes Western Michigan Recyclability Certification for several food packaging base papers that utilize Ahlstrom’s proprietary FluoroFree® technology.

“We are proud that our food packaging products passed Western Michigan University’s testing protocol for recyclability,” says Travis Dahlke, Vice President, Food Packaging Americas. “Achieving this certification offers our customers and the marketplace yet another fiber-based solution to reduce traditional non-renewable materials in packaging engineering and creates a positive end-of-life scenario that consumers are demanding.”

The range of FluoroFree® products that have achieved recyclability certification are produced in Ahlstrom’s North American operations and are used in such applications as quick service restaurant packaging, pet food packaging, microwave popcorn, and confectionary, while also providing solutions for non-food packaging applications.

“Recyclable and compostable packaging plays a crucial role in addressing environmental concerns, reducing waste, and promoting sustainable practices,” Travis Dahlke further explains. “By offering the marketplace options for sustainable packaging, the packaging value chain can play a key role in reducing the amount of waste sent to landfills and incinerators, helping to conserve natural resources and reduce environmental pollution.”

A Lovely Redesign from Krispy Kreme and Device Creative

On July 13, 1937 the first Krispy Kreme kitchen opened in Old Salem, North Carolina. Founder Vernon Rudolph purchased the still-used secret yeast doughnut recipe from a French chef in New Orleans and began selling the pastries to local grocery stores. The smell from the kitchen was so enticing to passers-by that Rudolph decided it was in his company’s best interest to start selling the doughnuts directly to customers on the street. So, he cut a hole in one of the building’s outer walls and started selling doughnuts directly to customers on the street. Seven years later in 1944, the doughnut display cases we’re so familiar with today were brought into Krispy Kreme stores for the first time.
