AF&PA Responds to 25% Tariffs on Canada and Mexico

The American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) President and CEO Heidi Brock issued the following statement regarding President Donald Trump’s announcement of 25% tariffs on all products from Canada and Mexico and related retaliatory measures:

“While we recognize the Administration’s goals of securing our borders, AF&PA remains concerned that today’s new North American tariffs have potential to seriously disrupt our industry’s complex, cross-border supply chains. These manufacturing processes have been built and refined with the customer in mind around existing mill infrastructure for decades.

“Pulp and paper mills are strategically located across the United States to efficiently and sustainably create essential products for everyday use. From turning wood chips into pulp, pulp into base stock, and then transforming that raw material into a product that is then packaged for distribution, our industry’s manufacturing process involves many stages that can each happen at different facilities on both sides of the border.”

“Additionally, certain raw material inputs must be sourced from Canada due to specific fiber quality demands and transportation efficiencies.

This is the result of more than two decades of work that gives the forest products industry regulatory certainty while encouraging the use of renewable, carbon-neutral fuel. “While limits for several boiler types have become more stringent, we believe they are feasible and affordable. Already, to date, our industry has invested $1 billion in controls to meet Boiler MACT obligations.

KP Tissue Releases Second Quarter 2022 Financial Results

KPLP Q2 2022 Business and Financial Highlights • Revenue was $397.5 million in Q2 2022 compared to $339.3 million in Q2 2021, an increase of $58.2 million or 17.1%. • Net loss was $35.5 million in Q2 2022 compared to net income of $2.2 million in Q2 2021, a decrease of $37.7 million. “We delivered another strong quarter of double-digit revenue growth in Q2 2022, but the depth, breadth and speed of inflation severely impacted our operating results and lowered profitability,” stated KP Tissue’s Chief Executive Officer, Dino Bianco. “We expect a partial recovery in the third quarter as successive pricing increases begin catching up with the inflationary curve, productivity gains are felt at our Memphis operations, and extensive cost management initiatives take effect. By the end of the fourth quarter, we anticipate a full recovery based on peaked pulp prices and reduced freight rates along with additional pricing adjustments. Consequently, we are highly confident about returning to a normalized margin in the near term.”
