AF&PA Commends Administration Efforts to Streamline Regulatory Processes, Ensure Regulations Do More Good than Harm

Following President Donald Trump’s remarks on America’s environmental leadership, American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) President and CEO Donna Harman issued a statement applauding the Administration’s efforts to reform and improve various regulations that eliminate unnecessary red tape while still protecting the environment.

“From his first days in office, President Trump demonstrated support for U.S. manufacturing by directing his Administration to expedite permits for modernizing or constructing efficient and globally competitive manufacturing facilities and to reduce unwarranted regulatory burdens. We strongly support the continuation of these efforts, including regulatory certainty for our industry’s sustainable use of bioenergy and systemic regulatory reforms to ensure government regulation does more good than harm. Moreover, the pulp and paper industry has made consistent voluntary progress in improving our energy efficiency by more than 10 percent and reducing greenhouse gas emissions by nearly 20 percent since 2005 and has achieved a record 68.1 percent paper recovery for recycling. We applaud sustainable regulation that promotes both economic and environmental progress for our nation.”

The Nature Conservancy of Canada and West Fraser Win SFI Conservation Leadership Award

The Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) presented the 2021 Leadership in Conservation Award to the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) and SFI-certified company West Fraser, today. The winners were recognized for their innovative leadership in connecting sustainable forest management with Canada’s commitment to protected and conserved areas. The Government of Canada is committed to conserving 25% of its land and 25% of its oceans by 2025 and is working toward 30% for each by 2030. SFI, the Nature Conservancy of Canada, and West Fraser are collaborating to ensure that conservation outcomes in Canada’s sustainably managed forests are fully recognized and contribute toward Canada’s Target 1 goals for conservation protection. The Target 1 Challenge is an investment by the federal government in projects that add to Canada’s protected and conserved areas across the country. “The winners are taking an innovative approach to the pathway to Target 1, by facilitating an objective assessment of managed forestlands,” said Paul Trianosky, Chief Conservation Officer at SFI. “Validating and confirming the role of sustainable forest management, including those forests certified to the SFI Forest Management Standard, will help meet Canada’s conservation goals, and make clear the contributory value of managed forests at a large scale.”

More carbon sinks, fast! Are we aware of what is already being done?

Currently, the public discussion on Finnish forests often boils down to everyone being concerned about our carbon sinks. However, Finnish forest owners and Finnish forestry continuously take care of our carbon sinks by investing in forest growth through efficient regeneration and good forest management. Naturally, there is also room to improve. For the climate, the most important aspect of sustainable forest use is ensuring the growth of new forests. When forests are regenerated, it is important that the new trees begin to grow rapidly. This means that choosing correct, well-bred and high quality silvicultural material is important. The majority of the forest area that is annually regenerated, around 100,000 hectares, is established by either planting or sowing. Choosing the correct forest cultivation material is an easy and long-term method for impacting the growth of the new forest and its future tree yield. click read more below for additional information
