Ad Industry Urges California Lawmakers To Reject New Data Broker Bill (mediapost.com)

The major ad organizations are urging California lawmakers to reject a bill aimed at enabling residents to easily remove their information from every data broker registered with the state. The California Consumer Privacy Act already allows people to request removal of their information from data brokers, but on a company-by-company basis. The new Delete Act (SB 362), introduced earlier this year by Senator Josh Becker, would require all data brokers in the state to honor an opt-out request made through a single mechanism. “Without data, companies would not be able to deliver critically important products and services consumers benefit from today, sometimes without even being aware of how this data supports their safety and enjoyment of everyday life,” the groups write.

And while the magnitude has been difficult to benchmark, much less track, weakening advertising marketplace conditions are projected to accelerate the proliferation of malvertising, according to the first of what is planned to be an ongoing series of "threat assessment" reports published for the ad industry by the Trustworthy Accountability Group (TAG).

Paper or Digital Communication: New Two Sides Survey Shows U.S. Consumers Want the Right to Choose

In an attempt to reduce costs, many banks, utilities, insurers and other service providers are switching consumers from paper to electronic bills and statements, often without their consent, and some are now charging fees to receive paper statements. Others are urging their customers to switch from paper to digital communication because it’s “green” or “better for the environment.” But a recent survey commissioned by Two Sides North America and conducted by international research firm Toluna found that consumers want the freedom to choose how they receive important communications from the companies they do business with. The Two Sides survey showed that 81% of U.S. consumers believe they should have the right to choose how they receive important communications from their service providers, on paper or electronically, and 73% believe they should not be charged more for choosing a paper bill or statement. These percentages increased from 2021 by 78% and 67%, respectively. While using the internet can be a quick and convenient way to transact business, companies that default customers to electronic communication put at risk many Americans who do not have broadband access, cannot afford it or have difficulty using the internet.

Big Idea Campaign (jschmid.com)

Why are marketing campaigns so effective? What is the secret behind the good ones that people remember and talk about (REI’s “Opt Outside”)? Quite simply, a BIG IDEA. The best marketing and advertising over the decades have always been driven by a singular great idea (“Got Milk?”). A core idea that ties everything together. An idea that resonates with the audience and makes them think about your product or service in a different way. Remove that big idea and all you’re doing is selling products, just like the other brands. Blah. But when you build your marketing efforts around a campaign, and use that “big idea” consistently across all touchpoints, it’s more likely to get noticed, more likely to be remembered, and more likely to engage people on a human level. In other words, campaigns work.

KKR Wins S&S for $1.62 Billion (publishersweekly.com)

In a move that some in the industry will welcome as putting at least a temporary stop to industry consolidation, the private investment firm KKR has reached an agreement with Paramount Global to acquire Simon & Schuster for $1.62 billion in an all cash transaction. Though below the $2.175 billion that Penguin Random House had previously agreed to pay for the country’s third largest trade publisher, $1.62 billion is a healthy price since most trade publishers sell for not much better than 1.5 times sales, and S&S’s 2022 revenue was $1.18 billion.

Sustainable forest certification gives consumers confidence

Sustainable forest certification on paper and packaging is a reassuring sign for earth-conscious consumers. This certification means the manufacturing process won’t threaten the long-term health of forests. Wood is one of our greatest renewable resources, so it’s important that creating pulp and paper doesn’t contribute to widespread deforestation in North America. Fortunately, net forest area in the U.S. has increased over the past three decades, and remained stable in Canada. Sustainable forest certification is an important tool for ensuring responsible harvesting and manufacturing. That’s why we were early supporters of using third-party certification that ensures wood is responsibly sourced. Supply chain transparency offered by certification has existed for nearly 30 years — far longer than similar standards for other commodities.

The Power of Disrupt, Delight, and Drive (jschmid.com)

Want to make a huge difference in response across all your channels? In this fast-paced digital era, capturing and retaining customer attention requires a thoughtful and strategic approach. But sometimes, we create complicated marketing programs without a true understanding of the consumer or what we ultimately want them to do. The formula for great marketing is quite simple. We must DISRUPT their busy lives, we must DELIGHT with content that emotionally resonates and most importantly, we must DRIVE them to do something. Disrupt: Breaking Through the Noise - In today’s oversaturated marketplace, capturing customer attention is an ongoing challenge. Delight: Creating Content that Emotionally Connects - What is it you are truly selling? It’s not about the product and it’s not always about the discount. Drive: Creating Immediate Action - While disruption and delight are essential, your goal in the omnichannel world is to drive customers to act.

Haremar is fighting to fill the talent pipeline (canadianplastics.com)

Faced with a labour shortage, this Vaughan, Ont.-based blown film coextruder is using a mix of hiring and retention strategies to staff up. A boxer on the receiving end of a few one-two combos – a jab and the straight right hand – can have his lights turned out pretty quickly. For manufacturers, the one-two combo of a shortage of both skilled workers (which predated the COVID-19 pandemic) and unskilled workers (triggered by the pandemic and continuing to this day) can put a business out of business, literally turning out the lights for good. The ongoing workforce crisis is the most pressing challenge facing manufacturers today, and plastics processing – which is technologically-driven but also labour-centric – can be particularly vulnerable.

Seven Strategies to Navigate USPS Regulations for Effective Self-Mailers (piworld.com)

As you know from our post on postcards, there are many times that a design element causes a mailing to go at a higher rate of postage. This can be frustrating as well as expensive. In order to help you stay away from potential issues here are some things to keep in mind as you are preparing a direct mail campaign. Now let’s look at Self-Mailers: 1. Self-Mailer size is 5 x 5 to 6 x 10.5, anything larger is not mailable in this category. 2. Paper stock must be a minimum of 70lb, as long as the weight is under an ounce. 3. Keep your aspect ratio between 1.3 and 2.5. 4. There are two options for addressing a self-mailer. Barcode in the address block: 4 x 2 clear area, no varnish, UV coating, text, or images for the address block. 5. There are two kinds of folds horizontal and vertical: For horizontal folds: the final fold is below the mail panel. 6. Tabbing or fugitive glue closures are required: If tabbing: up to 1 ounce mailer needs two 1 inch tabs, mailers over 1 ounce need two 1.5 inch tabs and if you are using perforations or inserts it needs two 2 inch tabs. 7. Poly bag/envelope: If you use a poly bag or envelope your mail will have to go at flat postage rates.

Specifically, the paper businesses experienced a significant downstream destocking cycle. Customers reduced their inventories in anticipation of lower prices, thereby affecting demand. In response, we proactively curtailed excess production in Europe and North America, implemented various cost-saving initiatives across our operations, and applied measures to optimise working capital. The profitability of  the South African business was more stable, bolstered by the dissolving pulp business. Despite the challenging economic environment, we generated cash in the quarter and liquidity in the group remained strong.

FSC Ukraine continues to stand strong amidst challenges of the war

Oksana Pavlishchuk, forest management certification manager, says they quickly turned fear and worry into resilience and endurance. “The new reality of the war required different organization of work processes and everyday issues, combining offline and online work,” she explained. As soon as Russia invaded Ukraine, FSC agreed to adapt its framework to allow certification in Ukraine to continue in areas not affected by the war, allowing the country to continue to benefit from its standards.

E-Commerce Giant Amazon Working To Reduce Packaging Waste

Amazon plans to eliminate plastic in its mailer bags as part of an effort to cut down on waste, decarbonize and improve overall sustainability, according to the company’s 2022 sustainability report released this week. It’s also boosting attention to packaging lightweighting and elimination. The company is “phasing out padded bags containing plastics in favor of recyclable alternatives,” the report says. Some of the bags are solely made of plastic while others are a blend of plastic and paper; the mixed materials can present recycling challenges. In the U.S. and Canada last year, the company replaced 99% of padded bags made from a mix of plastic and paper with paper-padded bags that the company says are recyclable. Upon announcing the production of its 1 billionth EarthKraft recyclable paper padded mailer last month, Georgia-Pacific noted that Amazon provided feedback in 2020 that consumers are demanding sustainable alternatives to plastic mailers. Walmart is also among the companies switching from plastic to paper mailers for e-commerce.

GreenFirst Announces Lumber Duty Deposit Rate Reduction

GreenFirst Forest Products Inc. (TSX: GFP) is pleased to announce the reduction in its softwood lumber duty deposit rate from 20.23% to 7.99%, which is expected to take effect on or about August 2, 2023. This official change by the United States Department of Commerce (“US DOC”) results from the Final Determination of the Fourth Administrative Review of softwood lumber imports from Canada to the United States for the year 2021. Since August 28, 2021, upon the acquisition by GreenFirst of the Rayonier sawmills, the US DOC assessed GreenFirst’s duty deposit rate on softwood lumber imports to the United States at a significantly higher rate than its Canadian peers. The net effect of the US DOC’s decision has resulted in a reduction in GreenFirst’s earnings and a corresponding overpayment of softwood lumber duties in relation to other Canadian exporters. We believe the amount of the overpayment up to the end of June is approximately US$21 million; however, at this time we are not certain when this reimbursement may occur. Beyond this overpayment, GreenFirst has an additional US$51 million of duties on deposit pending a broader industry settlement.

Deep Dive: Best Uses of Compostable Packaging

The primary reason to use compostable packaging is to help deliver food waste and other organic matter to composting facilities. Food waste in landfills is one of the main sources of methane, a powerful greenhouse gas that has about 20-80 times the power of carbon dioxide. Diverting food waste from landfills is a key intervention to limiting climate change, and compostable packaging can help do that by being the “vehicle” that food scraps ride along with on their way to composting facilities. Composting facilities that accept compostable packaging are able to bring in more food waste than those that don’t. Compostable packaging should be reserved for packaging that is: *Used to serve prepared food or contains frozen or raw food *Likely to deliver food to a composting facility *Food-contact packaging that is not readily recyclable *Often disposed of with food waste (e.g., produce stickers) *Fiber-based and is likely to become food-soiled

Clicks to Bricks: You Probably Aren’t Measuring Digital Marketing Correctly, and it’s Costing You (mytotalretail.com)

Despite the fact that the retail landscape continues to undergo massive waves of post-COVID evolution, there are many things that still haven’t changed — like the fact that consumers continue to go to physical stores to shop and that the physical portion of retailers' businesses still command the largest share of their revenues by a very large margin. Despite this, many retailers still only focus on the e-commerce sales impacts of their digital marketing, and ignore the in-store sales impacts because it's “difficult to measure.” This myopic focus is costing them — a lot. Web analytics tools or the measurements provided by the large platforms like Google and Meta have always relied on clicks to tell the story of campaign value. However, with major privacy changes in the market made by Apple and coming soon from Google, any measurement approach that relies on tracking individual consumers has been dying a death of a thousand cuts. Even measuring digital ads’ impact on e-commerce is getting a lot harder.

PEFC chain of custody certificates issued against previous 2013 standard soon to be invalid

Important reminder for companies still certified against the 2013 version of the PEFC Chain of Custody standard, or certification bodies issuing PEFC chain of custody certificates: any certificates issued against the 2013 version will no longer be valid as of 14 November 2023. If you are a company still certified against the 2013 standard, please reach out to your certification body for assistance or to organise your next audit against the 2020 standard. It is important to note that the transition to the new version does not impact the certification cycle, so it can happen during a surveillance audit. If you still have existing stocks of products and printed material covered by a 2013 chain of custody certificate and carrying the PEFC trademarks according to the previous 2008 Trademarks standard, you can still sell them once you have transferred your chain of custody system to the 2020 version of both these standards.

Act now: Amendments to packaging rules will cause ‘flood of plastic’ pollution

Call to correct mistakes in proposed amendments to EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation that will penalize recyclable materials, like cardboard, while promoting the plastics industry. Imagine you’re in charge of regulating packaging in the European Union. You’re bringing in some new rules to reduce waste and pollution. So far, so good. But then it is revealed that an amendment mandating the reuse of packaging will cause a flood of plastic. That is exactly the opposite of what you’re trying to achieve. Do you vote for it anyway? The answer is obvious. Yet this is the exact dilemma now facing the EU, as it debates proposed amendments to the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR).

Bradford & Bigelow Installs New Web Offset Press with LED-UV Curing (piworld.com)

The new press is its second Lithoman. According to the printer, after producing books for years on a Lithoman, it was an easy decision for B&B to choose another Manroland Goss press. B&B has been a pioneer in the use of UV inks. Several years ago, the printer converted its sheetfed and Timsons web presses to AMS Spectral UV’s LED UV ink technology successfully. However, the technology had not been perfected for higher-speed webs like the Manroland Goss that run north of 30,000 impressions per hour.

Billerud Interim report January–June 2023

The second quarter was challenging with all-time low sales volumes and with currency-neutral net sales declining by 18% compared to the same period last year. The largest sales decline was in North America due to the continued inventory destocking resulting in production curtailments. This, in combination with historically high fiber costs in Europe led to a weak result. By all indications, the blastomycosis outbreak at the Escanaba mill is behind us. Following a three-week idling and deep cleaning of the facilities, operations were successfully resumed on the 8th of May. We continue to work closely with local, state and federal health experts as they complete their analysis of the testing and sample collection at the mill. Results will be made publicly available in due course. The negative financial impact of the outage and the deep clean was SEK 85 million in the quarter. From the 1st of April, our financial results are reported according to a regional structure. Business conditions differ vastly between Europe and North America, even if the current situation of high inventories and destocking applies to both regions. Region Europe’s profitability deterioration in the second quarter was primarily due to all-time-high fiber cost and soft volumes. Region North America on the other hand delivered a comparatively healthy margin, despite an operating rate of 50-60%, thanks to our cost-leadership and tight cost control.

Ask Congress to Stop Postage Hikes

Dear ACMA member or friend of the ACMA: Please play an important role by urging key Congressional committee members to intervene and stop Postmaster Louis DeJoy from continuing these punishing twice-a-year postal rate hikes. The July 9th increase was the third in the past 12 months. The action we're asking of you is fairly simple and easy, but requires two key steps: 1. The ACMA is a flagship member of the Keep Us Posted campaign, headed by former Kansas Congressman Kevin Yoder. Just use this platform to ask Congress to stop these rate hikes. 2. We have hand-selected you (and likely, a colleague or two from your company whom we also know) because your headquarters, your other facilities, or clusters of your employees are in districts of Congressional members who serve on the House Oversight Committee, the key committee that oversees the USPS. Please see the list below and use the Keep Us Posted letter as a template to write the appropriate representative separately from item 1 above. Send your letter by email to the contact listed below each Congressional member.

ATA Truck Tonnage Index Increased 2.1% in June

American Trucking Associations’ advanced seasonally adjusted (SA) For-Hire Truck Tonnage Index rose 2.1% in June after increasing 1.2% in May. In June, the index equaled 116.5 (2015=100) compared with 114.1 in May. “While the tonnage index increased in both May and June, it remains in recession territory,” said ATA Chief Economist Bob Costello. “The index continues to fall from a year earlier and is off 1.9% from its recent peak in September 2022. A multitude of factors have caused a recession in freight, including stagnant consumer spending on goods, lower home construction, falling factory output, and shippers consolidating freight into fewer shipments compared with the frenzy during the goods buying spree at the height of the pandemic. However, the magnitude of the year-over-year declines is improving, perhaps pointing to a bottom in the freight market.” Compared with June 2022, the SA index decreased 0.8%, which was the fourth straight year-over-year decrease. In May, the index was down 2.4% from a year earlier.

Is Using Synthetic Paper More Eco-Friendly Than Lamination?

While the material and equipment costs of the traditional two-step lamination process were once a deterrent in choosing lamination over synthetic paper, the environmental impact of using lamination has arrived as the key detractor for choosing lamination as robust sustainability initiatives have become the norm across nearly every industry. This leaves end users and printers alike with an important question: Are there sustainable alternatives to traditional laminates that offer the same degree of substrate strength and protection? The short answer is yes, and, here, we’ll look at a couple of ways choosing sustainably manufactured synthetic paper can provide superior protection for your print media in a more eco-friendly way. Synthetic paper is manufactured to be 100% recyclable. While some laminates can be recycled and reused for other purposes, the process involves removing the laminate from the substrate, which is a time-consuming and costly process.

But Colleen Hoover remains the bestselling queen. Seven of the writer’s works make up one-third of the top 20 adult titles of the year to date, and are nearing the four million mark in combined sales. If anyone is to get the credit for shaping this bestseller list, however, it’s the young people on TikTok. In addition to Hoover, Bonnie Garmus, Emily Henry, and Taylor Jenkins Reid all hit the list thanks at least in part to online fervor, with Reid reaching it twice with two backlist titles, BookTok favorite The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo and 2019’s Daisy Jones & the Six, the latter helped into the top 20 by the TV adaptation that hit Amazon Prime in March.

Norske Skog: Successful launch of packaging paper production and good cash flow from operations in weaker markets

Norske Skog’s EBITDA in the second quarter of 2023 was NOK 380 million, a decrease from NOK 675 million in the first quarter of 2023. The main driver for the lower second quarter EBITDA was lower publication paper sales prices. The cash flow from operations in the quarter was NOK 353 million. During the second quarter Norske Skog entered the packaging paper market with a successful production start-up of Bruck PM3, and the first rolls of packaging paper delivered to customers. The rockslide at Norske Skog Saugbrugs will likely keep the paper machine PM6 out of the publication paper market through the first half of 2024. An insurance compensation for business interruption is therefore recognized in the second quarter results. The start-up of the Golbey conversion project is postponed to the second quarter of 2024. Despite the rockslide at Norske Skog Saugbrugs and weakened demand in all segments in the quarter, we have managed to maintain high sales volumes, healthy profitability and a strong financial position.

Thus, NTFP utilization can have many positive impacts on rural livelihood. The rubber sector in Vietnam includes both larger corporate forests and plantations managed by smallholders. This standard will help to remove bottlenecks and boost the supply of FSC certified NTFPs such as bamboo, rattan, oil from community/ natural forests, and latex from rubber plantations which are increasing in demand in Vietnam, thereby supporting sustainable forest management.
