Metsä Group starts pre-engineering of Kuura textile fibre mill

Metsä Group takes a big step forward in the development of Kuura and starts pre-engineering the first commercial Kuura textile fibre mill. Its purpose is to prepare for the industrial production of Kuura fibre. This is an important step in Metsä Group’s work to develop wood-based products of higher added value. The Kuura textile fibre is produced from softwood pulp, the raw material of which is sourced from Metsä Group’s Finnish owner-members’ forests.

The pre-engineering of the Kuura mill is expected to continue until the summer of 2026. The project entity that has now started consists of four parts: pre-engineering of the first commercial mill, the development of the Kuura fibre production process, work done with customers to facilitate market entry. The application for an environmental permit is part of the factory’s pre-engineering package.

Kuura textile fibre is a new product developed by Metsä Group, in which Finnish wood is converted into a unique textile fibre with high added value – without fossil fuels.

Stora Enso intends to divest its Kvarnsveden site in Sweden to Northvolt

Stora Enso announced that it has signed a letter of intent to divest the Kvarnsveden site in Sweden to Northvolt. Due to structural decline in demand for graphical paper, in April 2021 Stora Enso announced a plan to close its Kvarnsveden paper production site. Founded in 1900, Kvarnsveden produced pulp and paper for over 120 years until production ended in September 2021. Northvolt is a European supplier of sustainable battery cells and will develop the site into a battery manufacturing plant, reusing and refurbishing the existing facilities and site infrastructure. According to Northvolt, the gigafactory is expected to start the first part of its operations in late 2024, and will employ up to 1,000 people.

Resolute Announces Price Increase on Uncoated Freesheet Grades

Please be advised that Resolute Forest Products will raise the price of its Uncoated Free Sheet Connect, Connect Envelope and Connect Tablet grades by US$2.00 cwt effective with shipments on or after November 1, 2017. This increase will apply to all basis weights, and includes all upcharges.
