Jaakko Nikkilä appointed President of Billerud Europe

Jaakko Nikkilä holds the position of Executive Vice President at UPM, heading the business area Specialty Paper with global sales of around EUR 1.5 billion, until year-end. Jaakko Nikkilä has extensive experience in both international sales and production of fiber-based packaging materials. He has been employed by the UPM Group since 1995 and served as a member of the UPM Group Executive Team since 2019.

I am convinced that his qualities and deep understanding of the paper and packaging industry will be instrumental for Billerud going forward,” comments Ivar Vatne, President and CEO of Billerud.

Jaakko Nikkilä, born 1967, is a Finnish citizen. He will assume the position as President of Billerud Europe on 1 May 2025 and will be based in Stockholm. As previously announced, Matthew Hirst will leave Billerud on 31 January 2025. Ivar Vatne will act as the interim President of Region Europe from 1 February to 30 April.

Q1 2021 highlights • Sales decreased by 2% to EUR 2,234 million (2,287 million in Q1 2020) mainly due to lower prices of graphic papers and unfavourable changes in currencies • Comparable EBIT was EUR 279 million, 12.5% of sales (279 million, 12.2%), in line with last year • Pulp demand continued to be good and pulp prices increased rapidly. Strong markets continued for labelling materials, specialty papers and energy • Operating cash flow increased to EUR 217 million (137 million) • Strong financial position continues. Net debt was EUR 83 million (-405) and cash funds and unused committed credit facilities totalled EUR 3.2 billion at the end of Q1 2021 • UPM issued a EUR 500 million Green Bond under the EMTN programme in March

Paper Excellence Announces Crofton Union Issued Strike Notice

Paper Excellence on 10/21/2022 announced that one of the unions at its Crofton mill, the Public and Private Workers of Canada (PPWC) local 2, has given 72-hour strike notice, putting the union in a strike position on Saturday October 22, 2022. Since July 2022, the company has been negotiating with PPWC local 2, which represents 370 of the 575 employees that work at the site. Those discussions have recently hit an impasse, and the company’s mediation request was rejected by the union. The negotiations committee will continue to meet as they try to resolve the situation. To protect the health and safety of employees, the integrity of the local environment, and preserve the company’s assets at Crofton, Paper Excellence has begun a controlled and orderly shutdown of the kraft pulp mill and mechanical paper operations.
