Novolex and Pactiv Evergreen Inc. to Combine, Establishing a Leading Manufacturer in Food and Beverage Packaging

Novolex® and Pactiv Evergreen Inc. (NASDAQ: PTVE), announced today they have entered into a definitive agreement to combine, creating a leading manufacturer in food, beverage and specialty packaging products.

The combination brings together two highly complementary businesses that will offer a broad product platform, establishing one of the most diverse substrate offerings in the packaging industry. The asset base will include an extensive manufacturing footprint and an expansive distribution network, enhancing the combined company’s ability to serve customers ranging from large, blue-chip brands to small businesses that serve millions of consumers every day.

TIME featured 200 innovations this year in its annual list of the best inventions, and Cruz Cool is featured in the Reuse & Recycle category. Cruz Cool is a curbside-recyclable cold-chain cooler from Cruz Foam, a circular materials company. This modern take on cold-chain packaging replaces traditional EPS foam coolers and is perfect for protecting temperature-sensitive products for up to 48 hours. Cruz Foam is made from chitin, a material derived from shrimp shells and sustainably sourced from naturally occurring waste streams in the seafood industry. Whether it’s meal kits, fish packaging, or frozen-food packaging, it has the same temperature control performance as its non-sustainable predecessors. Cruz Foam, which forms the inner insulation layer of Cruz Cool, is home compostable, and the entire unit is certified through Western Michigan University (WMU) as curbside recyclable. The Cruz Foam is washed out and separated from the cardboard during the recycling process, eliminating any impact on the cardboard recovery.

Mondi collaborates with Veyzle, WEPA and Soprema to make release liner production waste more circular

Mondi, a global leader in packaging and paper, has improved the circularity of material flows in two release liner production sites in Germany and the Netherlands. 95 % of the production waste is now used as secondary raw material for other industries, thanks to its strategic partnerships. By collaborating closely with industry stakeholders along the value chain, Mondi has tackled the siliconised and coated paper waste produced at its release liner plants in Jülich, Germany, and Heerlen, Netherlands. It is now repulped and valorised as secondary raw material in a range of other applications. Mondi Jülich and Mondi Heerlen kicked off a partnership with Veyzle, a Dutch specialist in the recycling of paper and plastics, and the Dutch site of the WEPA Group, an expert for sustainable hygiene papers, two years ago. Since then, Veyzle collects Mondi’s production waste from the two plants and sorts, shreds and bails the different papers before transporting them to WEPA. WEPA has developed an advanced repulping technology to valorise laminated and siliconised papers and uses them to create hygiene paper, such as toilet paper and paper towels. All three partners are located close together to keep transportation to a minimum.
