AAP StatShot Annual Report: Publishing Revenues Totaled $29.9 Billion for 2023

The Association of American Publishers (AAP) released StatShot Annual for calendar year 2023, estimating that the U.S. publishing industry generated a healthy $29.9 billion in aggregate publishing revenue for books and course materials across print and digital formats. The result is a minor 0.8% decline when compared to final stated numbers for 2022. It is a 6.1% increase over the pre-pandemic figure of $28.2 billion total recorded in 2019.

“This year’s report captures an industry that is both resilient and forward-thinking about how people read, enjoy, and learn from works of authorship,” commented Syreeta Swann, Chief Operating Officer, Association of American Publishers. “In addition to the strong numbers for 2023, the report shows positive trends over a five-year period across multiple categories, formats, and channels.”

New figures from the U.S. Census Bureau suggest online sales grew roughly 15.9% in January, a slight deceleration from strong gains in December and November. What the government agency calls “nonstore sales” reached $54.97 billion on a seasonally adjusted basis in January, a 10.2% increase compared with $49.87 billion. Nonstore sales mainly take place online but also include other channels such as mail and telephone orders, door-to-door sales and sales through vending machines. USPS Service Performance Improvement Holds Steady in Latest Weekly Update

The U.S. Postal Service provided updated third quarter service performance data through the week of June 18th which shows performance improvement continues to hold steady since the second quarter. Performance numbers below include the weeks of April 1 through June 18: *First-Class Mail: 87.5 percent of First-Class Mail delivered on-time against the USPS service standard, an over 9 percent increase over the second quarter. *Marketing Mail: 90.8 percent of Marketing Mail delivered on time against the USPS service standard, a nearly 6 percent increase over the second quarter. *Periodicals: 79.1 percent of Periodicals delivered on time against the USPS service standard, a nearly 8 percent increase over the second quarter.
