Metsä Group has selected key partners for the pre-engineering project for Muoto™ packaging factory

Metsä Group’s pre-engineering project for a potential commercial-scale Muoto™ fibre product plant is progressing as planned. After the pre-engineering phase, Metsä Group may consider making an investment decision. The partners selected for the pre-engineering project are Elomatic, SRV, Valmet Technologies and A-insinöörit Suunnittelu.

SRV will act as project management contractor for the construction project and will also be the engineering design partner for the building services. Elomatic has been selected as the main design partner for the design of the factory structure and facilities and will assist in the cost planning and construction schedule. Valmet will act as process engineer for the fibre product in the project. A-insinöörit Suunnittelu Ltd has been selected as the plant construction design partner for the project.

“In this project, we are scaling up operations from a pilot plant to industrial scale and designing the workplace of the future. It is a completely new product and operating model, and we have chosen partners whose vision and experience will best support the progress of the project,” says Veli-Pekka Kyllönen, Project Director of Metsä Group’s innovation company Metsä Spring.

Sustainable Adhesives: Sugra Project Researches Environmentally Friendly Solutions For The Packaging Industry

“Adhesives are indispensable in packaging production: they reduce material requirements and enable lighter packaging, which is in line with the objectives of the new Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR). Although adhesives only make up a small proportion of total packaging, they have a significant impact on recycling processes, paper production and the CO2 footprint. The Sugra (“Sustainable Gluing with Renewable Adhesives”) project is dedicated to this topic: it is developing adhesives based on renewable raw materials that protect the recycling process and reduce the CO2 footprint. These adhesives meet the requirements of modern production techniques and promote sustainable production without compromising performance. The basis of adhesives is starch: this natural raw material is already used intensively in natural and modified form. Starch plays a particularly important role in paper production and processing, as it increases the strength of paper and refines its surfaces. In corrugated cardboard production, starch is used to bond the layers together.

Sonoco Participates in European Recycling Trials That Show Digital Watermarking Yields Accurate Container Sortation Results

The first HolyGrail 2.0 sorting prototype was successfully validated in March this year following semi-industrial trials, using NIR and digital watermarks detection to sort packaging waste with a 99 percent detection rate and the potential to develop new, more granular post-consumer recycling streams. The Digital Watermarks Initiative HolyGrail 2.0, driven by AIM – European Brands Association, and powered by the Alliance to End Plastic Waste, has the goal of assessing whether the digital watermarks technology can enable better sorting and higher-quality recycling rates for packaging in the EU. Today, more than 160 partners across the value chain are working together to refine and commercialize this concept. Sonoco, one of the largest global sustainable packaging companies, is a member of the HolyGrail 2.0 initiative to prove the viability of digital watermarking for sorting packaging waste and the business case at scale, likely with global implications. Trials in Copenhagen found that using digital watermarks on packaging resulted in 98 - 100 percent being correctly detected, with a subsequent total ejection rate of 90 - 100 percent.
