Stora Enso postpones conversion of paper machine at its Langerbrugge paper mill (papnews.com)

Stora Enso has decided to postpone potential plans to convert a paper machine at its Langerbrugge paper mill in Belgium from the production of recycled newsprint to recycled containerboard.

Currently, the Langerbrugge mill has two machines: one produces recycled newsprint and the other produces recycled supercalendered magazine paper. The mill has the capacity to produce 540,000 tonnes per year of recycled paper.

“Our study on the opportunity to deliver more recycled packaging to the market proved positive. However, as the availability of recycled containerboard in Europe currently meets market needs, we decided to postpone the conversion decision, which will be taken in due time. While we remain agile and responsive to market trends, our dedication to our paper customers is unwavering. We are fully committed to continuing to provide the high-quality products and service excellence that our clients have come to expect from us for the foreseeable future, solidifying Langerbrugge’s legacy as a cornerstone of paper production,” Rebekka Thielemann, VP, Product and Sales Recycled Containerboard explained.

Sonoco Enters into New $750 Million Revolving Credit Facility

Sonoco announced it has entered into a new five-year $750 million revolving credit facility (the “Credit Agreement”) with a syndicate of banks. The Credit Agreement replaces an existing credit facility entered into on July 20, 2017, and reflects substantially the same terms and conditions. “We are pleased to upsize our prior $500 million committed credit facility with a new $750 million revolver and extend the maturity date for an additional five years. This new credit facility provides us with additional financial flexibility and reflects our strong credit profile. It also illustrates the solid relationships with our commercial banks,” said Julie Albrecht, Sonoco Vice President and Chief Financial Officer.

American Forest & Paper Association Releases September 2020 Containerboard Monthly Report

Total Containerboard production in September increased four percent compared to September 2019. It was up four percent when compared to the same nine months of 2019. September 2020 production of containerboard for export decreased 12 percent compared to the same month last year; it was up 19 percent year-to-date. The containerboard operating rate was 95.9 percent, up 3.7 points from September 2019 and up 2.8 points year-to-date. Mill inventories of containerboard at the end of September decreased 67,000 short tons from the previous month and were up 25,000 short tons compared to September 2019.
