New opening in the relationship between the Polish State Forests and FSC

Cooperation between the State Forests in Poland and FSC International was the subject of a meeting at the headquarters of the Directorate General of State Forests. Representatives from both institutions, as well as the Ministry of Climate and Environment, discussed the return to FSC certification.

The meeting, held on 29 February 2024, was attended by Mikołaj Dorozala, Deputy Minister of Climate and Environment, Jerzy Fijas, Deputy Director General of State Forests, and Kim Carstensen, Director General of FSC International.

“I am very pleased that we were able to organize this meeting at such short notice,” said Minister Mikolaj Dorozala. “This is in line with the government’s policy in the area of sustainable forest management that strengthens the natural and social functions of the forest, while increasing the competitiveness of the Polish timber sector.”

Currently, four out of seventeen regional directorates of the State Forests (RDSF) – Katowice, Szczecin, Szczecinek and Zielona Góra – hold FSC certificates, proving that the timber was harvested as a result of responsible forest management. The first two have used the derogation and are in the process of auditing with the intention of continuing to use the FSC certificate. If the audit is successful, the two RDSFs will be given the opportunity to do so till the end of August.

Status of forest management certification in Poland

The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification has been a vital component of sustainable forest management in Poland for over 25 years. Until recently, approximately two-thirds of the total forest area of 9.2 million hectares in the country were FSC-certified. The certified forests are managed by the Regional Directorates of State Forests (RDSF) and two Forest Experimental Stations under the University of Poznań. Despite initiating dialogue in November 2022 between FSC International and Polish State Forests, six Regional Directorates of State Forests (RDSFs), representing an area of roughly 2 million hectares, have opted to discontinue FSC certification in their respective regions. The affected regions include: *Gdansk (FSC-certified area: 303,938 ha) - expired *Torun (FSC-certified area: 456,447 ha) - expired *Poznan (FSC-certified area: 419,535 ha) - certificate expired on 4 April, 2023 *Warsaw (FSC-certified area: 194,960 ha) - certificate expiring on 9 April, 2023 *Radom (FSC-certified area: 325,074 ha) - certificate expiring on 1 May, 2023 *Pila (FSC-certified area: 362,770 ha) - recertification granted on 10 March, 2023; license agreement terminated by RDSF Pila, effective until May 31, 2023. There are currently 2,500 FSC Chain of Custody (CoC) certificates in Poland, making it one of the top countries for FSC CoC globally.

Mondi makes mulching more sustainable with Cotesi, replacing unnecessary plastic with paper

Mondi is helping farmers grow their crops, having partnered with Cotesi to replace conventional plastic mulch film with a paper solution, Advantage Kraft Mulch. Mulching films protect crops from birds, weeds, soil erosion, sun and heavy rain. These films are traditionally made from plastic, rolled out during planting and then removed and disposed of at harvest. Mondi’s Advantage Kraft Mulch provides a sustainable paper alternative: the solution is made from 100% kraft paper, created from responsibly sourced wood, with no plastic or coating. Advantage Kraft Mulch is an industrially compostable paper solution certified according to DIN EN 13432 and provides a comparable level of protection as plastic mulch film. Field trials currently underway are promising: the kraft paper remains strong, inhibiting weed growth, and is expected to decompose after the harvesting season is finished.
