Amazon.com Announces Fourth Quarter Results

Fourth Quarter 2023
*Net sales increased 14% to $170.0 billion in the fourth quarter, compared with $149.2 billion in fourth quarter 2022.
*Operating income increased to $13.2 billion in the fourth quarter, compared with $2.7 billion in fourth quarter 2022.
*Net income increased to $10.6 billion in the fourth quarter, or $1.00 per diluted share, compared with $0.3 billion, or $0.03 per diluted share, in fourth quarter 2022.

Full Year 2023
*Net sales increased 12% to $574.8 billion in 2023, compared with $514.0 billion in 2022. Excluding the $0.1 billion unfavorable impact from year-over-year changes in foreign exchange rates throughout the year, net sales increased 12% compared with 2022.
*Operating income increased to $36.9 billion in 2023, compared with $12.2 billion in 2022.
*Net income was $30.4 billion in 2023, or $2.90 per diluted share, compared with a net loss of $2.7 billion, or $0.27 per diluted share, in 2022.

Holiday Book Sales Slipped Again

At outlets that report to NPD BookScan, unit sales of print books were down 1% in the week ended Dec. 3, 2017, from the similar week in 2016. This was the second consecutive week in the holiday season that sales were lower than at the same time last year; the previous week saw a 2% decline from the similar week in 2016. The only major category in which sales rose was juvenile nonfiction: units were 5% higher than in the week ended Dec. 4, 2016. L.L.Bean Rebrands to Be More Digital

L.L. Bean is stepping away from its traditional back-to-school catalog. Ad Age reports the Maine-based retailer is rolling out a new website with a digital push and three TV spots centered around its new "Be an Outsider" campaign. It's all part of an effort from the traditional catalog business to become more digital centric. "The campaign is one piece of a bigger strategy to shift us from a heritage brand, in catalogs, to a product company," said Brad Matson, senior vice president of creative for L.L.Bean. Later this year, L.L.Bean is planning on launching more robust digital marketing efforts, including in-store experiences and at least a dozen TV spots by the end of 2017. RH Q1 sales soar 78% (chainstoreage.com)

RH reported first-quarter sales and earnings that beat expectations and raised its full-year forecast, expressing confidence that its strong performance will continue through the rest of the year and in 2022 and beyond. The luxury home furnishings company (formerly known as Restoration Hardware) cited a number of factors for its positive outlook, including a strong housing and renovation market (both with pent up demand and a long tail), a record stock market, low interest rates and the reopening of several large parts of the economy. It will also launch the largest new product introduction cycle in its history, beginning this fall. “Additionally, the un-masking of the general public could lead to a Roaring Twenties type of consumer exuberance,” CEO Gary Friedman wrote in his quarterly letter to shareholders.
