Eco-Products Earns Industry First for Compostable Packaging with No-Added PFAS

The global packaging and paper group Mondi is contributing to a better world, with innovative and sustainable packaging solutions, and proving that non-recyclable plastic can increasingly be replaced by paper. Buying vegetables directly from farmers, flying less, using less water – an increasing number of consumers are living more sustainable lives, and at the same time expect companies to offer them sustainable options, according to a recent study by market intelligence agency Mintel. Mondi is firmly committed to these objectives and has been meeting its customers' evolving needs with innovative packaging and paper solutions for many years. The Group always uses paper where possible, plastic only when useful.

Phoenix Flexibles has one plant located in Gujarat, India, and the business generates annual revenue of approximately US$20 million from the sale of flexible packaging for food, home care and personal care applications. Amcor currently has four flexible packaging plants in India. The business has delivered double-digit organic sales growth per annum over the last three years, significantly outpacing growth in the underlying market, and is also investing to double its local footprint in the Pharmaceutical and Medical packaging categories.

Now that the company has replaced its two oil-fired lime kilns with a biofuel-fired lime kiln, SCA Containerboard can claim to be the first kraftliner manufacturer with fossil-free industrial processes. The new lime kiln, part of the chemical recycling process in pulp production, was commissioned at the end of November. The construction of a new lime kiln is part of the major investment in the Obbola Paper Mill, where SCA is expanding to increase kraftliner production and meet the company’s goal for fossil-free manufacturing. - The aim of our investment in a new lime kiln is to get rid of fossil oil, as well as to meet the need for expansion, says Pär Micael Samuelsson, project manager for the lime kiln subproject. - We will eliminate 8,000 cubic metres of oil per year. Had we continued to use the two oil-fired kilns, we would have needed an additional 2,000 cubic metres to achieve the necessary sulphate pulping. Now we don’t need this and we have completely eliminated oil consumption, he explains.
