Metsä Group has revised its strategic sustainability targets

Metsä Group has revised its 2030 sustainability targets as part of the Group’s strategy work. The revision of the targets is a step towards a fossil free and waste-free future that bolsters nature. The company’s climate actions are based on both global climate change mitigation and adapting to it in Finland’s changing climate.

Focusing on the most essential sustainability issues, the targets cover all of Metsä Group’s operations and will also affect supply chains. In particular, Metsä Group is working to increase measures improving forests’ natural biodiversity and health as well as measures promoting fossil free production. The 2030 targets are monitored with a comprehensive, more than doubled set of indicators.

“Metsä Group is committed to safeguarding natural biodiversity, mitigating climate change and promoting the sustainable use of natural resources, healthy workplace communities and ethical operations. We must be able to take even more action to secure a sustainable future,” says Ilkka Hämälä, Metsä Group’s President and CEO.

Natural biodiversity is safeguarded especially through measures that increase the diversity of tree species and the amount of decaying wood, and by preserving valuable habitats. Metsä Group is carrying out separate measures in habitats that threatened forest species have adapted to. These habitats include herb-rich forests, eskers and burned forest areas.

Dressed in wellington boots and rain jackets, the dedicated Tree Planting Team from Sappi Europe, including Berry Wiersum CEO, once again braved the Brussels weather to plant a further 1,250 saplings in the Forêt des Soignes. GreenFirst receives 2021 FSC® Leadership award for maintaining forest certification for over 15 years

GreenFirst Forest Products Inc. is pleased to announce it is the recipient of a 2021 FSC® (Forest Stewardship Council®) Leadership Award, an award recognizing uncommon excellence that advances responsible forest management and forest conservation. GreenFirst was awarded a 2021 FSC Leadership Award for maintaining FSC (FSC® – C167905) certification on over 9 million acres (3.8 million hectares) of complex boreal landscapes in Ontario and Quebec for more than 15 years. The award is specific to two forests areas managed by GreenFirst; the Gordon Cosens Forest in Ontario and those managed by the Abitibi-Ouest team in Quebec (management units 082-51, 085-51 and 085-62).

Reducing our Industry’s Water Use

Water quantity and quality concerns have been steadily rising in the last several years. Arguably, the crisis in Flint, Michigan has caused the country to focus on water issues more than it ever has before. While that focus, appropriately, is on drinking water infrastructure, water use and quality issues are and will continue to be of concern in many regions and communities. In those areas, AF&PA members are taking the steps necessary to be part of the solution. Through our Better Practices, Better Planet 2020 initiative our members have committed to reduce water use in their pulp and paper mills by 12 percent from 2005 to 2020. In 2014, they are more then half way there, having reduced water use by 6.5 percent.
