Clearwater Paper Announces Revised Multi-Year Sustainability Goals and Continued Commitment to Progress in 2022 ESG Report

Clearwater Paper Corporation (NYSE: CLW) today released its 2022 environmental, social and governance (ESG) report. Along with a continued commitment to create sustainable paper products, the report also highlights a significant increase in company-wide priorities to meet several key sustainability benchmarks. These include emissions reductions, resource conservation and company representation, among others as part of revised, multi-year goals.

“These goals are the most ambitious we have committed to as a company and represent our desire to make measurable progress in several areas while continuing to act as responsible citizens and contributors in the communities where we operate,” said Clearwater Paper CEO Arsen S. Kitch. “This path forward supports our sustainability journey over the next decade.”

In this year’s report, Clearwater Paper states their plans to achieve a 30% reduction of Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 2030; achieve female representation of 30% or greater of their salaried workforce through 2030; and include ESG targets, goals, and outcomes in executive compensation.

Report Highlights:
*Announcement of revised emissions goal: 30% reduction of Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 from 2020 baseline
*Set commitment to include ESG targets, goals, and outcomes in executive compensation
*Completion of a first report through CDP (formerly the Carbon Disclosure Project), enabling efforts to quantify greenhouse gas emissions output and further refine climate impact reduction goals. This reporting supports alignment with the Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) framework
*Recorded zero serious injuries and fatalities (SIFs) in 2021
*Reduced Scope 1 and 2 emissions by a total of 12% in 2021 vs. 2020 baseline
*Reduced 2021 water usage by 5% compared to 2020
*Launched a new diversity, equity, and inclusion (DE&I) strategy with a specific goal of achieving female representation of 30% or greater of their salaried workforce through 2030

135 second-grade students from Trevor, Wisconsin, and Mishawaka, Indiana, celebrated Earth Week by learning about the cycle of life from trees to paper and back to trees. The interactive session is dubbed TICCIT for, “Trees into Cartons, Cartons into Trees.” Created by the Paperboard Packaging Council (PPC), of which Colbert Packaging is a member, the program teaches young learners about the role trees play in the environment and our circular economy. The program teaches the importance of recognizing sustainable packaging and supporting the recyclability of paper-based packaging. The visual presentation was topped off with a hands-on session where students were invited to prepare and take home their very own tree sapling in a paperboard planter. “We are delighted to have the opportunity to share the importance of environmental stewardship with an enthusiastic audience of local students,” said Colbert Marketing Manager Wanda Speer.

PEFC and PAFC at the One Forest Summit

This March, world leaders will gather in Gabon for the One Forest Summit to advance our collective ambition regarding the preservation and sustainable management of rainforests. And PEFC will be there. The forests of the Congo Basin are one of the last truly untouched forest areas in the world. But there is increasing pressure on these forests as the region’s population grows and looks to the forests as an important driver for economic development. PEFC is present in the Congo Basin through our three PAFC national members: PAFC Cameroon, PAFC Congo, and PAFC Gabon. Together, under the name of PAFC Congo Basin, these members have jointly developed a regional forest certification system. “The One Forest Summit was launched at COP 27 by Gabonese President Ali Bongo and French President Emmanuel Macron. They both recognised the environmental and economic value of the Congo Basin Forest and the urgency to act to preserve it,” said Thomas Seyvet, Development Officer, part of the PEFC international team travelling to Gabon for the Summit.

Renewable, recyclable and responsibly-sourced at the Sustainable Retail Summit

Taking place in Berlin late last year, the Consumer Goods Forum’s Sustainable Retail Summit, a global network for the consumer goods industry, focused on those burning issues. We were present at the Summit to discuss the benefits that packaging from sustainable sources can have for a more sustainable industry. We teamed up with the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) and PEFC Germany for a special session, taking a deep dive into sustainable packaging and sustainable forest management. Panelists from the public sector and the industry, including Coca-Cola, Heineken and Metsä Group, discussed the role of forests in biodiversity conservation, land erosion prevention and energy production, and how they can help support the SDGs.
