Forest certification systems are essential to enable sustainable timber traceability

“What I’m most looking forward to at the PEFC Stakeholder Dialogue are practical and informed discussions on the crucial role of forests and certification to support net zero emissions by 2050,” says Dr Dorothy Maxwell, Sustainability Director at Davy Horizons and a moderator of tomorrow’s Stakeholder Dialogue.

In our interview, she gave us an insight into her job as Sustainability Director, the role of forests for tackling climate change, and what difference certification makes for businesses.

Can you briefly introduce yourself?
Hello – I’m Dr Dorothy Maxwell. I’m a sustainability professional with over 20 years international experience working with business and government on sustainability. My training is a MSc and PhD in Environmental Science from Imperial College London. I’m a Fellow and, board member of the Institute of Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability.

Can you tell us more about the role of a Sustainability Director, and the main tasks and responsibilities it includes?
I am currently Sustainability Director with Davy Horizons – sustainability and ESG expert advisory unit in financial services firm Davy Group. We support businesses – PLC to private – understand what investors require across ESG and then support them integrate sustainability credibly in their business aligned to best practice and science.

Atlantic’s E-waste Recycling Program

Atlantic just sent 17 pallets of electronic waste to a recycling facility. That’s 7,749 pounds of waste that will be given a new life instead of sitting in a landfill! Every employee at a company has a unique perspective, and when they’re presented with inspiration their great ideas come to life. Two years ago, Nate Huot began collecting old hardware laying around Atlantic’s facilities. This process gradually grew into a popular, new program at Atlantic. Old computers, copiers, monitors, battery backups, and a variety of other products have been collected from our locations in Acworth, Dalton, Greensboro, Tabor City, Wilmington, and Sturgis. These used devices would have ended up in a landfill if it wasn’t for the E-Waste Recycling Program. E-waste is full of valuable rare earth elements (REE’s) and toxic minerals. If these materials are not disposed of properly, they can pollute the environment.

Mid America Paperboard Recycling Will Educate TAPPI CorrExpo Audience on the Value of Waste

First time exhibitor Mid America Paper Recycling (booth 221) plans to showcase the benefits of an industry-first waste audit report and explain recycling best practices at the TAPPI CorrExpo, October 14-16 at the Denver Convention Center. One of the largest independent brokers, processors and exporters of recovered paper in the Central United States, Chicago-based MAPR has deep roots in the printing industry dating back to when it was founded in 1926. As large commercial printers and paperboard converters search for new methods to improve their revenue sources, MAPR’s experience in the recycling process can likely help them. “I felt our decision to exhibit at TAPPI CorrExpo for the first time this year was a natural. We have been working with paper industry and corrugated users for years,” said Paul Pirkle, who joined Mid America Paper Recycling as president last year.
