Mohawk Renewal Straw Announcement

Part of innovating means pushing boundaries and taking risks to bring new and exciting products to the market. Mohawk Renewal launched in April 2020 as a groundbreaking line of papers made with recycled cotton textiles and alternative fibers, including straw. To make Mohawk Renewal possible, we had to forge together an unprecedented supply chain with strategic partners.

One of these partners, Columbia Pulp — the only North American supplier responsible for processing wheat straw into pulp to make Mohawk Renewal Straw — announced in February 2022 that they were ceasing operations. We have exhausted every avenue in Columbia Pulp’s absence, but without a supplier, we cannot continue to support this industry-disrupting product and will have to discontinue Straw from the Mohawk Renewal portfolio effective immediately.

We will sell the remaining inventory of Mohawk Renewal Straw to depletion without replenishment.

Mohawk’s full support is behind Renewal’s other alternative fibers — Hemp and Recycled Cotton – which have an established supply chain, have been selling steadily in the market and will continue to do so. In addition, we will continue to drive innovation in the alternative fiber papermaking space and are actively looking into other fiber sources.

Rayonier Advanced Materials Announces Preliminary Second Quarter Results Impacted By COVID-19 With Improved Liquidity

Rayonier Advanced Materials Inc. announced preliminary second quarter results which were impacted by COVID-19 market-related conditions. The Company expects earnings and Adjusted EBITDA for the quarter to be slightly below prior year, driven by an approximately 12 percent decline in revenues. Compared to the prior year period, results for the second quarter were aided by improvements in Forest Products and Paperboard segments driven by increased prices for lumber and lower raw material costs for paperboard, respectively. These benefits were offset by COVID-related impact on: 1) global demand for High Yield Pulp and Newsprint; 2) sales volumes in High Purity Cellulose due to softer demand in textile, automotive and construction end markets; and 3) logistics delays impacting High Purity Cellulose volumes. Corporate costs increased modestly from prior year, primarily due to an increase in non-cash charges. With a focus on working capital and capital expenditures, liquidity improved $19 million in the quarter to $164 million, including $49 million of cash.

Domtar Corporation Reports Preliminary Third Quarter 2020 Financial Results

Domtar Corporation reported a net loss of $92 million for the third quarter of 2020 compared to net earnings of $19 million for the second quarter of 2020 and net earnings of $20 million for the third quarter of 2019. Sales for the third quarter of 2020 were $1.1 billion. Operating loss was $136 million in the third quarter of 2020 compared to operating income of $14 million in the second quarter of 2020. Depreciation and amortization totaled $71 million in the third quarter of 2020. Operating income before items1 was $43 million in the third quarter of 2020 compared to operating income before items1 of $15 million in the second quarter of 2020. When compared to the second quarter of 2020, manufactured paper shipments were up 20% and pulp shipments decreased 7%. The shipment-to-production ratio for paper was 105% in the third and second quarters of 2020. Paper inventories decreased by 20,000 tons, and pulp inventories increased by 38,000 metric tons when compared to the second quarter of 2020.
