FEFCO Launches Corrugated Packaging Recyclability Guidelines

The European Federation of Corrugated Board Manufacturers (FEFCO) has issued the Corrugated Packaging Recyclability Guidelines – design for circularity.

With the aim to contribute to the sustainability of packaging, the guidelines provide the industry with a practical set of tools to implement in the recycling of paper and board to ensure the optimal use of natural resources and minimise their environmental impact.

The circular economy needs recycling, waste prevention and re-use to keep materials in the loop and minimise the use of resources. Paper and board are a sustainable, renewable and ecologically sound choice for packaging. In practice, the recyclability of packaging products will be determined by composition. This all starts with their design, followed by the way they are collected, sorted, and presented for reprocessing.

Paper and board recycling in the EU is a success story, with over 83% being effectively recycled. Corrugated packaging is a champion of using recycled paper for new packaging, having 89% recycled content on average.

Eleni Despotou, Director General of FEFCO said “The corrugated board industry provides sustainable and circular packaging products supporting the Green Deal ambition of the European Union. Recovering, recycling, and reusing raw materials can help achieve this. The Corrugated Packaging Recyclability Guidelines provide the industry with an outline to reach our sustainability goals”.

UPM moves forward with biofuels growth plans and starts the basic engineering phase of a next generation biorefinery. The potential biorefinery would have an annual capacity of 500,000 tonnes of high-quality renewable fuels including sustainable jet fuel. Give your feedback on amendment proposals to the PEFC Sustainable Forest Management standard for EUDR alignment

Stakeholders globally are invited to give their feedback on the proposed amendments to the PEFC Sustainable Forest Management standard (ST 1003) to achieve alignment with the EUDR requirements. Deadline for comments is 13 July 2024. To ensure that PEFC-certified raw material coming out of PEFC-certified forests is EUDR compliant, the PEFC SFM Working Group has added and amended a number of requirements to the PEFC Sustainable Forest Management standard (ST 1003). Now we need your feedback on these new and amended requirements. The public consultation is open now and you have until 13 July 2024 to give your comments. Please note, we will only accept comments on the new and amended requirements, any comments given on requirements outside this scope will not be considered.

Forest roads can be built with fly ash from SCA’s industries

Fly ash from SCA’s industries can be used to build high-quality forest roads, as shown in a study carried out by SCA and Skogforsk (Forestry Research Institute of Sweden). “Sustainability runs through everything we do, and being able to re-use fly ash for our roads is another step towards integrating the forest with industry,” says Tomas Johansson of SCA Skog. Every year, SCA builds approximately 1,000 kilometers of forest roads. At the same time, SCA’s industries produce thousands of tonnes of fly ash in conjunction with their use of forest raw materials such as branches and crowns for energy. “Using the fly ash where it does the greatest good is important.
