Smurfit Kappa reports strong progress in its 8th annual Sustainable Development Report

The report, “Sustainability in every fibre” highlights Smurfit Kappa’s focus on designing and enabling truly circular systems, with a unique commitment to use only 100% sustainably sourced fibres in its products and processes. Full transparency is assured through adherence to the GRI 4 Comprehensive sustainability guidelines. Progress made in 2014 against the five newly defined strategic sustainability priorities includes:

Forest –  All raw material used in paper production is now sourced under certified Chain of Custody systems
Climate Change – 21.6% reduction in carbon emissions per tonne of paper produced, on track for 2020 target of 25% reduction
Water – 28% reduction in organic content of water (COD) returned to the environment from mills, on track for 2020 target of 33% reduction
Waste –  Twelve out of 38 paper mills effectively did not send waste to landfill in 2014
People – 80% response rate to the first company-wide employee engagement survey, MyVoice2014

Commenting on the strong performance outlined in the report, Gary McGann, Group Chief Executive Officer at Smurfit Kappa said:

Mohawk Hudson Land Conservancy Announces Protection of 64-Acres of Forest Donated by WestRock

Mohawk Hudson Land Conservancy announced the acquisition of 64 acres of forestland recently donated by WestRock, a leading supplier of differentiated paper and packaging solutions. This beautiful stretch of land situated just west of the Hudson River in the town of Bethlehem, N.Y., is a rarity among the development that has rapidly claimed the river valley’s natural spaces. Following the generous donation from WestRock Company, MHLC will ensure the land’s permanent protection. This forestland has long been a focus of local conservation efforts. Along with significant ecological value, the property also has historical interest as part of the original Corning family estate. MHLC Executive Director Mark King said, “We are so pleased to announce the acquisition of this important property and want to acknowledge the generosity of the WestRock Company that made the conservation of this property possible. The acquisition captures an important part of the former Corning estate, which was such an important part of Albany history and preserves some of the remaining open space in this rapidly developing area.”

Resolute Forest Products: Pushing Back Against Progressive Bullies

An editorial, “Pushing back against progressive bullies,” which appeared in The Wall Street Journal on March 18, 2016, provides an interesting synopsis of the events between Resolute and Greenpeace and concludes: “Greenpeace has tried to contain the Resolute case and ensure it only affects its Canadian operations, but Justice Fitzpatrick wisely understood that it is one global organization. Now the Divisional Court in Ontario is considering the issue and if Greenpeace loses again, the outfit could soon be coughing up the internal documents behind its various campaigns of fear and intimidation world-wide.”
