SFI Celebrates the International Day of Forests

The Sustainable Forestry Initiative celebrates forests every day, but every year on March 21 we join so many others to formally recognize the United Nations International Day of Forests. This year’s theme is “Forest restoration: a path to recovery and well‑being.” SFI’s mission directly supports this theme and the broader UN Sustainable Development Goals. SFI-certified forests and products are powerful tools to achieve shared goals such as mitigating climate change, conserving biodiversity, protecting clean water, reducing waste, educating current and future generations, and supporting sustainable economic development that creates jobs and improves lives.

There are more than 375 million acres/150 million hectares of forests certified to SFI with tens of millions more positively influenced by SFI fiber sourcing. And every day, SFI-certified organizations plant 2.5 million trees across the U.S. and Canada.

This year, SFI is pleased to share the first in a series of story maps—interactive tools to provide users with a new and immersive way to engage with SFI content.

The Conservation Impact Project Story Map provides insights into how SFI supports unique, science-based research and solutions to advance conservation outcomes in well-managed forests.

The SFI Forest Management Standard Story Map shares how SFI certification is working to shape markets to ensure that properly managed forests play a crucial role in keeping the planet healthy.

Access these story maps through the toolkit page on the SFI website. We encourage everyone to use these new tools, share them with others, and provide us with feedback.

SFI continues to work to advance sustainability through forest-focused collaborations. The International Day of Forests highlights what we can achieve when we work together for forests today and into the future.

Avery Dennison First to Certify BOPP Films for HDPE Recycling Under APR Guidance

Avery Dennison Label and Packaging Materials announced that its Clear Biaxially Oriented Polypropylene (BOPP) film portfolio has been certified to comply with the Association of Plastic Recyclers (APR) Critical Guidance Protocol for HDPE recycling. The Avery Dennison BOPP portfolio is the first to pass testing, and the company is committed to expanding the portfolio of film materials with pressure sensitive emulsion acrylic adhesives that meet the APR HDPE Critical Guidance moving forward. The announcement gives brands in the personal care and beauty space, as well as other segments that use Avery Dennison clear BOPP films on high-density polyethylene (HDPE) plastics, validation that the labels stay with the container without impacting the recycling process. The APR Critical Guidance is a comprehensive laboratory scale protocol that is used to assess the compatibility of packaging innovations with reclamation systems. The Critical Guidance for HDPE-CG-01 was released on July 20, 2020. Avery Dennison is the first label manufacturer to achieve certification in accordance with the new guidelines. The company has previously achieved certification with APR Critical Guidance for PET plastics.

Sustainability Does Not Come for Free

In recent years, a variety of sustainability labels have found their way onto paper and pulp products to highlight their environmental performance, recyclability, and the role that paper and board play in the circular economy. To meet the market demand for an increasing volume of labelled products, Mercer has committed to an ambitious goal: by 2030, at least 80% of the wood used to manufacture our products will be certified. But trade, and the industry in particular, reach their limits when it comes to making products with both an FSC certification and their availability in sufficient quantities. This is especially problematic if the raw materials are to come from a regional source. There are many reasons for the insufficient provision of FSC wood from German lands for pulp and thus for paper production. At the end of all considerations, it is the complexity of the FSC system, with many rules and requirements, that prevents greater success in Germany. This complex system also prevents the assertion of a great idea: that sustainable management in the forest takes into account the interests of forestry and forest management, social concerns, and environmental interests.
