Kruger Products’ mill in Gatineau, Que. is receiving $15,000 from the federal government to help implement an energy management information system (EMIS).
The tissue manufacturer matched the contribution to the project, bringing the total investment to $30,000.
The EMIS is expected to further reduce energy costs and improve energy efficiency. Kruger Products has reduced its energy consumption intensity by 15 per cent and its greenhouse gas emissions intensity by 28 per cent since 2009.

Paper Excellence on 10/21/2022 announced that one of the unions at its Crofton mill, the Public and Private Workers of Canada (PPWC) local 2, has given 72-hour strike notice, putting the union in a strike position on Saturday October 22, 2022. This result reflects the sharp downturn in lumber market prices seen during the fourth quarter. *Lumber prices dropped, reflecting economic headwinds and lower demand in Q4 2022, with an average selling price of $644/mfbm compared to $800/mfbm in Q3 2022. Steadily rising interest rates since Q2 2022, in response to high inflation, reduced US housing starts and caused flagging homebuilders’ confidence, which worsened during the fourth quarter.
To ensure a viable, profitable future for the Rumford Division, ND Paper will be transforming the mill to increase its product flexibility and shift further into packaging grades. Notable changes include: • Commissioning of an unbleached recycled pulp line to provide fiber flexibility to the R12 and R15 paper machines • Conversion of its R15 paper machine from P&W papers into lightweight, high strength kraft linerboard products • Expansion of R12 paper machine capability to include unbleached recycled bag and converting papers, in addition to its current offering of bleached and unbleached papers • Continued operation of the R9 pulp dryer, including expansion into unbleached softwood kraft market pulp • Permanent curtailment of mechanical pulping operations and R15 coating and supercalender assets
