Verso Corporation Names Randy J. Nebel as President and CEO

Verso Corporation (NYSE: VRS) today announced the appointment of Randy J. Nebel as President and Chief Executive Officer. Mr. Nebel has served as interim President and Chief Executive Officer since October 2020 and has been a member of Verso’s Board of Directors since November 2019.

“We are pleased that Randy has accepted our offer to transition from the interim role to a permanent position,” said Chairman of the Board Sean Erwin. “His more than 40 years of knowledge in the paper and packaging industry, combined with his breadth of executive leadership experience, make him the right choice for this role.”

“Since becoming interim President and CEO in October, I have had the privilege of working with Verso’s talented and dedicated team, spending time in our mills, meeting with customers and creating a dialogue with our investors,” said Nebel. “I am optimistic about the opportunities ahead and look forward to continuing to work closely with our team and Board to execute company strategic goals and initiatives that achieve results and create long-term value for all of our stakeholders.”

Mr. Nebel previously served as Executive Vice President of Integrated Packaging at KapStone Paper and Packaging Corporation and prior to that was President of Longview Fibre Paper and Packing, Inc. He was also a past member of the Board of Directors of the National Association of Manufacturers and the American & Forest Paper Association.

Winfried Schaur appointed as Executive Vice President, Technology and Mika Kekki as Executive Vice President, UPM Plywood

Winfried Schaur has been appointed as Executive Vice President, Technology and Mika Kekki as Executive Vice President, UPM Plywood as of October 1, 2021. Both will be members of UPM’s Group Executive Team and report to Jussi Pesonen, President and CEO. They will succeed Jyrki Ovaska and Mika Sillanpää who both will retire at the age of 63 at the end of 2021. Winfried Schaur is currently the Executive Vice President, UPM Communication Papers and member of the Executive Team. He has held several senior positions in UPM’s paper business since 2001. Mika Kekki is currently the Vice President, Production & Operations, responsible for UPM’s eight plywood mills and production related support functions. He has held several management positions in UPM and preceding companies since 1994.

Rottneros Secures Long-term Renewable Energy Agreement

Rottneros has entered into a long-term Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) including Guarantees of Origin (GoOs) with the third largest German energy group Energie Baden-Württemberg (EnBW). The utility will supply Rottneros with just over 30 GWh/annum of clean energy delivered from the 116 MW Målarberget wind farm in Sweden over an 8.5-year period starting in 2025. The partnership marks an additional step in Rottneros’ ambitions to reduce the environmental impact of its operations and its exposure to the volatile and uncertain electricity market. Rottneros’ goal is a fossil-free production according to GHG Scope 1 & 2 by 2030. The emissions from Rottneros’ operations come mainly from its external purchase of electricity, which is also their third largest variable cost item. In addition to helping Rottneros meet its climate targets, long-term PPAs are part of the company’s active work to reduce its long-term exposure to electricity price movements.
